Do you still have the mind of a slave

2009-12-06 14:00

THE moralistic condemnations that follow each episode of negrophobia – mistakenly named xenophobia – needs to make way for explanation.

All the explanations to date have failed to answer the key question: Why the orgy of violence for so little when there is so much to fight for?

A related question is: Why are only black “foreigners” targeted? What we see is in fact the outcome of the creation of the black as a subjugated non-being by the long period of racist colonisation.

The 350 years of white domination have reduced blacks to the status of sub-humans who wallow in deep darkness and have lost a sense of the self.

As Steve Biko said: “The white system has produced throughout the world a number of people who are not aware that they too are people”.

The fundamental problem is the “unpeopleness” of black South Africans, from the black squatter up to the politicians.

Blacks are the creation of whites. Modern Africa is a creation of whites. In the specific case of South Africa the creation of the black is associated with land dispossession, Christianisation and turning Africans into mere workers.

Cecil John Rhodes, one of the brutal colonialists, made it clear back then that blacks couldn’t be allowed to own land and cows because “in the future nine-tenths of them will have to spend their lives in daily labour” – basically working for whites.

This is an important issue to consider because we take it for granted that to work in order to live is a natural state of affairs.

The truth is we were made workers after being violently dispossessed of our land and black souls.

What the above shows is that you can make people into what you want them to be over time. Blacks have forgotten that they own this country, its land and wealth. T

hey have accepted their position as workers, hence most of the so-called xenophobic attacks have been directed at those who are perceived to be stealing our jobs.

What is even more troubling is that the jobs we are prepared to kill for are the worst-paid jobs. The people of De Doorns are expelling Zimbabweans so that they can have seasonal farm jobs. This is slave labour.

These same people have never taken any meaningful action to demand land for themselves or to share in the local economy, which is owned by whites.

The problem is we have accepted a “workers consciousness” not a black consciousness, which would be a repudiation of the worker identity, an identity of subjugation.

Those who know have tried to understand how consciousness is formed. If we say blacks have over time accepted their position of inferiority that means they can’t think out of this reality.

Karl Marx has argued that “life determines consciousness”. If this is true then we have a part explanation for what seems to be the irrational behaviour of black against black for nothing.

Your circumstances determine who you are. The sense of inferiority is not just a psychological state. It is produced and reinforced by the material reality.

That is why whites are never amakwerekwere. They are employment creators and investors. They give us life. How could we not think of them as superior?

Let’s take a crude analogy. Hunting dogs catch prey for their owner and then enter into dog fights over the bones thrown to them by the lazy owner. The dogs never revolt against the owner.

Luckily for humans our minds can be aroused to higher consciousness and we can begin to ask questions of our conditions, what Biko has called Black Consciousness.

Without this consciousness it doesn’t help even if you have the vote and declare yourself liberated – your mind is still that of a slave.

Your thinking remains that of a happy hunting dog. To live you fight for bones!

Ag shame. Any whites who would like to help?

It is not a white and black thing! It is a mind thing. As long as you keep on making it a white and black thing, you do exactly what you are agitating against. As long as you can keep the mind occupied with irrelevant issues, you stay in control!
Tash 12/12/2009 10:30:09 AM
I am a white girl working for a white man... I am not his slave. Why is it that only blacks think when working for a white person that they are their slaves? My husband is white, he has a black boss - he doesnt think of himself as a slave... What is wrong with your thinking?
Mzakhe kaNdirimani 12/13/2009 11:20:44 AM
Tash. You don't seem to understand the argument.
chris 12/13/2009 4:19:29 PM
What a load of hogwash. I think you are trying to stir up the racial flame. If you still feel like a slave in this day and age, you only have yourself to blame.
Mpa 12/14/2009 9:05:52 PM
He keeps to their rethorical gospel where all the blame goes. The poor opressed angels do not have to take responsibilty for themselves and their lives. They sit and wait for hand-outs. The more progressive ones steal.
Tash 12/15/2009 1:35:42 PM
Mzakhe. I got it perfectly, thanks. There is no arguement. I was using an example of how black people still believe they are slaves. That they work for a boss and that boss is white. Oh heaven forbid a white messaih that needs to save a black man from poverty.Get off your bottoms and do something. Stop proving that Africa is the begging bowl of the world. You sit with your hands together begging whilst blaming us for your poverty. I have black friends who grew up preciselly where you are, yet they work alongside me. Most have more degrees and and are educated. I am tired of feeling sorry for those who find solace in hating the white skin because of something that happened before our time.

I will agree with Andile Mngxitama that the black man has a slave mentality. But that does not come from 350 years of white rule and only in South Africa. It is easy not to do history and then say blacks are slaves because of the white South Africans. This is a lie Because if you go back in history the first black slaves to be sold in a market place was by the Arabs and that was even before Black Consciousness. So blacks as slaves came from before the bible and not only in South Africa. Then Andile must also ask how did America get Negros and again these slaves were caught by the Arabs and Portuguese and sold to slave ships and these were not the South African blacks but more North Africa. The first slaves in South Africa were chines and the Indian and Cape moslem and if history serve me black South Africans were never use as slaves. But like Andile said blacks have a slave mentality and then Andile must tell me why in the rest of Africa Xenophobia is in fact out of hand and there are no white but there are tribes and this is what will destroy Africa. Black man will fight blac kman because of tribes. It is happening in South Africa in the ANC Zulu against Xhosa

This has been my point in discussions thus far. Because we as blacks accept that we have to be workers, we will fight for the scraps at the table of the bosses. It is in fact instigated by those who owns the industries and those who control the wealth. Through the long history of our country there has always been this divide and rule tactic and this is what happens here. Divide the workers and let them fight against each other, and this allow you to keep on paying them R500 a month because they are so happy to keep their jobs. Blacks should be owning that farm beacuse they have worked their whole lives on it.
Donnavan 12/24/2009 10:59:38 AM
Ivan. So if I work all my life or a company like Eskom or Sasol, I can also say that I should own it now. Your thinking sounds like a slaves, to me! You are always looking for the easy out, it is much more easy to blame the white man, because everything is their fault.
MuAfrika 12/27/2009 10:04:37 AM
I just find the arrogance and ignorance of white South Africans, let alone the guilt induced defensive on all race and identity debates, hard to deal with. The likes of Tash with stupidity passed ones wisdom are not worth my time.We have a serious problem of white ignorant and often uneducated people who believe their skin colour makes them intellectually capable to tell us which debates to have and which ones not to have. I recommend Tim Wise for all white South Africans especially the guilt ridden ones with Tash's tone. Nobody wants white South Africans to sign cheques for them here, we want them to realise that their guilt and failure to talk about the past is the sign that they are actually slaves too. Slaves of fabricated SUPERIORITY that is now under threat by the success of the  long oppressed African for their(whites) well being. The wave of Africans in this country making it and taking charge is so large pity everyone wants us to believe nothing is changing. White South Africa has very little exposures in matters of Freedom, Self Determination, and Self Identity, and the sad part is that only the Africans can teach them that but how when they've been made to feel that 'black' Africa can teach them nothing but can make their gardens, and bath their children. The present is more exciting for the African than his oppressors, we making money, we exploring the world, we are making mistakes, we are learning. Am glad so many white people here are bitter, it is the sign we are doing something good. The African century has arrived...Obama is just the first scare and its just a needle in the white supremacy bubble...The time is now VUKANI NIZITHATHE MAAFRIKA

You captured it beautifully. Fanon documented this long ago in his seminal work Black Skin, White Mask. As black people we need to change our thinking, we are our worst enemies as well!
Wood John 2/27/2010 2:53:26 PM
This is marvelous, but then this has time and again cropped up but if u have no protection..we STILL UNDER COLONISATION
kaMatshobana 7/7/2010 12:18:19 PM
Very brilliant article Andile. It's true that our thinking as black people needs to change. However, we cannot always cling onto what happened to us as an exuse to justify sloppiness. MuAfrika, good comment. These are facts, and we cannot stick our heads into the sand and wish them away.
