International media reports on JZ’s love child

2010-02-05 15:30

By Qhakaza Mbali Mthembu

THE latest revelation about President Jacob Zuma fathering his 20th child seems to have not escaped the pages of international media titles.

This week Kenyan TV channel, NTV, posted a video – Zuma’s love child controversy – on the matter on You Tube. The video makes mention of the high HIV statistics in South Africa and Zuma’s controversial shower statement during his 2006 rape trail.

NTV’s reporter ends the video by saying: “safe to say, all his close friends and cabinet members will be watching their daughters’ movements closely from now on”.

In the UK’s Telegraph website, an article with the headline “Zuma’s love child provokes debate on polygamy in South Africa” was followed by the following comments.

“This culture excuse is the new thing the ANC use to act with impunity... (The) World, do not be fooled by this as you watch South Africa become a failed state...” Semakaleng Miya.

“Typical Banana Republic,” James.

“Zuma’s behaviour and attitude fly in the face of many important issues: the treatment of women, the need to limit population growth, and of course the need to deal with Aids which is killing 1?000 people a day and often the most productive in society. Using culture as an excuse is facile,” Betty Caplan.

The Telegraph reports that a TNS Global Market Research survey, conducted last month, “found that 74% (of the 2?000 South Africans they interviewed) feel that it is a problem for a man to have more than one wife at a time”.

THE Zuma love child controversy saga also made it to the top of The Namibian’s notable quotes list. The following are some of the leading quotes in the newspaper.

“Forget the presidential motorcade, we’ll need a “buscade” at the rate he’s going,” Anonymous.

“As the ANC, we have always made a distinction between people’s personal affairs and their public responsibilities,” the ANC spokesperson Brian Mthembu.

“Why does our president display such stereotypical bad behaviour of a randy black womaniser? I feel ashamed. (He is) Making babies like South Africa does not have a huge HIV/Aids problem coupled with gender problems. How are the youth expected to behave?” - Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale’s niece Kananelo Sexwale. The comment was posted on Facebook. She later apologised for her comments.

“We are Africans and sitting here all of us, Zuma is our father so we are not qualified to talk about that,” – ANC Youth League president Julius Malema.

The press in this country is also foreign owned, so there's no diferrence.

Since the early 2000s, the ANC has been reduced to an organization that fights personal battles for this one individual. He chose to associate with Shabir Shaik as an indivudual without the ANC but when he got into trouble as a result, the ANC had to come to his rescue at a great cost. When he chose to have unprotected sex with an HIV positive woman (remember the shower story) the ANC stood by him. Now he's done a similar thing again, and the ANC has to go out to the media and issue statements that clearly undermine the values that this movement has always stood by. How long must this organization suffer because of this person? Why does he have to be the president? The Movement has many capable people even from KZN. I want the man to retire as soon as possible, the movement should not be allowed to suffer because of someone who cannot keep his zip up.

Zuma brings trouble to himself. The press don't have to work very hard. Zuma should be recalled. And the international press have every right to report on his behaviour and his choices.

De Klerk the former bantu education minister grabbed a friend's wife and marriend her; there's no diferrence between the two cases. Berlusconi the Italian president has a chain of young girls and has recently divorced his wife: Watch this space. Clinton had a go at some youngling....he was not impeached. What is the fuss about......Africans want houses, education, HOSPITALS and LAND to be returned.

This gentleman is costing the ANC dearly, always putting them on the defensive. Remember the the corruption trial, the rape charges, the string of wives and now the love child. By the time e-dedelabanye he will have left the ANC with a huge task of clearing the mess he has caused to its reputation although I wonder who is going to take care of our reputation as a country. This brings us to the question why is the ANC prepared to shoulder the rather difficult task of defending the indefensible misdemeanors of JZ when it would be easier to ask him to step down thereby ensuring that he will cause them and the country no more shame?

We are so ashamed by this saga and actions of the state president who cannot control his sex apetite and defend himself with our beautifull cultural rights and forget his position and roles and responsibility, therefore expect us to continously defend him. He is definately not bigger than our organization and and our country and if he does not get his act together then will have no option but to start a campaign that will remove him as a state president, our country cannot be ruled like a Zulu monarchy, not all the South Africans are Zulu or believe in his own cultural rights.

Zuma must be recalled as a matter of urgency. He has done enough damage to the country already. Julius is a joke, he should consider going to school this year and improve his thinking capacity.

I think Msholozi should consider calling it a day and leave the high office to those who deserve it and go be a playboy
