16th Sama nominations surprise

THERE were a few unhappy faces last night at club Taboo in Sandton when the nominees for the 16th Annual MTN South African Music Awards were announced.
The most disappointed included members of TS Records such as DJ Sbu and PRO, who both didn’t make this year’s list. Arthur Mafokate’s 999 top singer Chommie, who released an album many thought was worth a nomination, also didn’t crack it.
But despite all the surprises, just about everyone else who had cracked it, was in a jovial mood.
The glamourous occasion yesterday set the standard high for the main ceremony to be staged at Sun City in Rustenburg, the North West, on the April 16-17.
Rhythmic Elements and Big Nuz, who both made it to the list, were asked what this meant to their careers.
Thapelo, aka Master T, of Rhythmic Elements said: “Last year when we were nominated and won an MTN Sama Award, we were very excited. This accolade has not only increased our value as a musical brand, but has also made people sit up and take notice.
“It has opened so many doors and allowed us to reach places that we’ve never imagined possible. Being able to do what we love on a daily basis and being recognised for our hard work is very fulfilling.”
Mashesha of Big Nuz said: “Since our nomination last year, our latest album has done so well in sales that we now have a gold disk going to platinum.
“Six radio stations in the country rated 'Umlilo' as song-of-the-year during the (last year) festive session until now and our SA supporters have rallied behind us all the way.”
Superstars like Lira, DJ Cleo, Foto Na Dans, Brickz, Rhythmic Elements, Da L.E.S., Oskido and DJ Kent, took celebrations onto another platform with their captivating performances. They kept every person who had attended the nominations event on their toes until the early hours.
But as much as it was a good excuse to get down, the real reason everyone made it through to Taboo was to find out who had made it onto the 2010 and 16th Annual MTN SA Music Awards.
