All roads will lead to Kempton Park on the East Rand tomorrow for
the annual celebration of Africa Day.
The full-day event will be a countdown to kick-off of the 2010 Fifa
World Cup on June 11.
The organisers have strung together an impressive list of acts from
across the continent including Nigeria’s D’Banj, better known as
koko-master.
The local queen of Afro-pop, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, will front
proceedings before hip-hop MCs HHP and Teargas take to the stage.
Ntombi, the daughter of Maskandi legend Ihash’ Elimhlophe, will
also be in the mix with Idols winner Sasha Lee and spoken-word artist Mak
Manaka.
Manou Gallo from the Ivory Coast and Cameroon’s Wax are billed to make
performances. The pair is currently in demand across the world with Wax being
named man of the month by US magazine Ladybrille.
This year’s festivities, to be held at the Dries Niemand Park in
Kempton Park, promise to be enough for the entire family to enjoy.
President Jacob Zuma is set to make an address early in the day
before a development programme soccer match will be played, followed by cultural
performances.
Poetry and dance shows will precede the late-night concert to be
broadcast on SABC 2 at 9pm.
The continent celebrated Africa Day officially on Tuesday. Africa
Day is a commemoration of the day on which the Organisation of African Unity –
now known as the African Union – was formed in 1963.
The day acknowledges the progress that Africans have made and
reflects on the common challenges we face.
