Popular American jazz singer Al Jarreau has been placed in intensive care in a hospital in southern France due to severe respiratory problems, a spokesperson for the hospital in the city of Gap said.
The spokesperson, Maurice Marchetti, said: “His condition is worrying.” But he added that the 70-year-old performer’s state of health was not life-threatening.
Marchetti said: “The doctors are hoping that his condition will improve over the next few hours.”
Jarreau was in southern France as part of a European tour. He was to perform a concert at nearby Barcelonnette.
Jarreau, who was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has won seven Grammy Awards over four consecutive decades. He is only the second artist in history – along with Michael Jackson – to win in three separate categories: Jazz, Pop and R&B.
