Blackberry cool

YOU have probably been in the middle of conversations where people sound like they’re talking an alien language, going on about “BBM” each other this and “Ping” each other that. Does it annoy you? If it does, it just means you are not part of the craze where anyone who is anybody in Joburg (and the rest of the world for that matter) is using a BlackBerry smartphone.
Before we tested the device, a few users were asked why they think this phone is the best thing since Chuck Norris.
Popular 5fm DJ, Themba “Euphonik” Nkosi says: “I’m constantly on the road and I have all the communication tools I need in one device that’s easy to use.
“It also allows me to keep in touch with the office and my business and gives me the tools I need to be on top of my game.
“It also looks good and hasn’t failed me to date.”
Singer Loyiso Bala says his phone is “an extension of my arm! Seriously though, I Iike that it’s multi-functional. A one-stop shop for all my touch points. My band also uses one for playing backtracks when we perform on stage, so it’s very useful.”
Okay, so these are guys and we kind expect them to be crazy about gadgety stuff. What about the ladies? Models, and spokeswomen for beauty products Matapa Maila and Terry Pheto also use the phone.
Maila says her phone’s calendar is synchronised with her daily schedule. “I can access my diary 24 hours. Sending and receiving emails anywhere and everywhere. It keeps me updated with my current affairs and it complements my taste.”
As for Pheto, she says: “If I have an audition I can quickly access my script, check emails, Google my competition and Tweet my life away.”
Okay, so it looks like each have their reasons, then again, what if you’re not in the entertainment industry as they are.
What does it have really, that would differentiate it from any other smartphone on the market? Is it for aesthetic reasons or to be with the “it” crowd?
One thing that’s for sure is its owners become a little bit self-absorbed and addicted to their phones – probably the reason why the rest of the world has nicknamed it “CrackBerry”.
