Jansen just an Uncle Tom

I AM appalled by the University of Free State’s (UFS’s) Professor Jonathan Jansen’s decision to withdraw charges against the four racist boys from Reitz. What those white boys did to the university’s black cleaners was a grave insult, not only to the cleaners but to the entire black race.

Black people continue to endure racist treatment and unfair labour practices on farms throughout the country and our government does nothing about it. Every time incidents like these happen people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu call for reconciliation. It seems they have made careers out of appeasing racists.

We need politicians and academics who are committed to advancing transformation and are not afraid to deal severely with racists. We don’t need Uncle Toms like Tutu and Jansen.

Jansen did not even consult the victims to find how they felt about the university’s decision to withdraw charges. He clearly did not have the poor workers’ interests in mind.

It is very sad when even the most enlightened and educated in our community still pander to minority interests. Jansen has shown that he is just a token appointment who has neither the courage nor the programme of action to transform the UFS.

He is further perpetuating the widespread belief that black academics are only concerned about gaining acceptance in the “white world”.Lucian HlopheDaveyton

I am having a problem understanding something here. First let me bring it to your attention that I am asking myself this as a 100% black and proud South African. I am having a challenge in understanding how those workers came to find themselves with these white boys. I understand that they work at the school right? Now do they work for those boys? Now how could they allow themselves to be in that situation? When our country became a democratic country, where they left out in the celebration? Did they not understand what it meant for them? Are they not aware of human rights? I mean I watched the video footage on tv like everyone and there was nowhere where I saw somebody usuing force for anyone to do or eat something from those boys.Because of the manner in which they where playing with those boys I find it difficult that one can subject themselves to that kind of treatment. Something is not right here. We speak of adults here who have been working for the university not for the white boys. I wonder as to when they managed to get time to play with those kids as they were supposesd to be working not playing those games of rugby and athletics. They made themselves victims by allowing those three white boys to degrade them. I wonder if they ever played with the black students the way they were playing with those white kids? I wonder if they were going to subject themselves to that treatment if it was from our fellow black brothers? You cannot demand to be treated fairly if you dont make people realise that you are for real. I feel that as adults they had a duty to teach those white students to respect them as they are adults. They failed themselves as much by not standing their grounds as democratic black people. We should not forget that people died for us to be where we are today and we cannot afford to bring ourself into any humiliating positions. Lets respect the course that our fellow comrades have sacrificed their all for.We need to stand our ground now.
