Er…Mr. President: Matter of concern

by By Thato Mthembu
2010-02-02 15:28

So our president does it yet again. He’s made the front pages of newspapers and got everyone’s tongues wagging and it’s not all positive (as usual). Hayi but this time even his ardent fans need to step back for a minute and admit that he’s become a matter of great concern.

Just to bring up to speed with the circus at play here; this past weekend headlines read, “Zuma fathers baby with Irvin Khoza’s daughter” which sparked great debate on Facebook and Twitter but I really do believe that many are missing the point or maybe even choosing not to see it at all.

This was posted by a Facebook user; “JZ at it again – it is a tad bit worrying when the head of our state is dropping babies and pushing game like he has nothing else to do like run a country- out in world conferences and instead of being asked about the state of our nation – he is being asked about his polygamy- is there a problem here or am i just a hater- ? hhhhmmmm?”

And a lot of the comments revealed a deep misunderstanding (or complete disregard) of the real issue at hand here.

“It’s the culture stop being so ignorant.”

Zuma’s culture dictates many things and polygamy is one of them, yes. However his relationship with his wives is not the issue at hand here. Polygamy is no license for men to sleep around and sow the seed of their loins at random. Even culture dictates fidelity to ones (four) wives. If we are going to defend this ‘culture’, let’s defend it in its entirety.

“Zuma has always been honest with his polygamy. Westerners don’t understand because it questions their belief system. always respect an honest man”

“He was right to refuse to explain himself. The white world needs to stop acting like they deserve an explanation for our existence!”

Our local politics have been so bedeviled by the race card that we feel the need to colour every debate. This is not a white/black Africa/West issue. Polygamy is not an African phenomenon, polygamy is practiced by Mormons in America, it is practiced in India, Indonesia Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon as well as most of Africa.

But again, polygamy is not the issue here. In a country and a continent so hard hit by Aids and HIV it’s is unacceptable for a leader to display such irresponsible sexual practices. Our very own government has embarked on an Aids campaign that discourages unprotected sex and multiple sex partners. How do we as a nation even begin respect leaders who say one thing and openly practice another?

“JZs love life is none of our business;”

“There’s really bigger problems out there than his personal life.”

I’m sorry, but for as long as a president’s wives and children are taken care of by the state, i.e. you and I the taxpayers, then the numbers of wives he marries and children he fathers is very much my business.

For as long as ignorance about Aids is shown by role models and irresponsible sexual practices continue to kill my peers, what the president of my country says about sex and Aids (both in words and in actions) is very much my problem.

I never thought I would ever defend polygamy but here goes…Mr. President, if you feel the need to be the official poster boy for all things cultural, stay true to all the teachings and not just those that serve what seems to be a rather insatiable appetite.

Hear hear! I laughed at ACDP leader Rev. Meshoe saying Zuma is a sex addict and needs rehab. But really though.. The president, 'personal life'.. Rape trials? Showers? Now baby mommas..? Its late.
Lungi 2/2/2010 4:06:55 PM
Many people cheat on there wives but anyway, I see another wedding coming
Lunga 2/2/2010 4:25:10 PM
It's a case of do as I say, but not as I do. Zuma has given the ignorant critics the ammunition which they need to fire at him. No, I'm not saying those that are criticising him for his shenanigans with Ms Khoza are ignorant, but rather those who link this whole saga to his practice of polygamy.
Guisseppi 2/2/2010 4:29:04 PM
It's a pity our president can't keep his chilobo in his trousers. He's unfit to set a moral example to the nation.
jack 2/2/2010 4:40:32 PM
Thato Mthembu said it all. Its a big no for Mr. President, and this is not acceptable.
Potso 2/2/2010 6:31:39 PM
You all got exactly what you deserve! A right to exercise your ignorance and impose on the rest of us this ill mannered man. So. Stop crying foul. You elected him, you now have to bare him. He is your president, and unfortunately mine too. But you are the majority of voters. How smart is this?
Mashi 2/2/2010 7:11:13 PM
This has nothing to do with morals. It has everything to do with overpopulation. It is irresponsible of Mr Jacob Zuma to have 20 children within 68 years and to argue that this fact has nothing to do with the public. If every one of the 23,868,700 males in South Africa has 20 children in his lifetime (Mr Zuma's current 68 years), then the South African population will soar from a current 49,320,500 within 68 years to 477,374,000. He is the president of this country and has to plan forward re: Public Health, Environment, Education, Food, Water, Energy, Job Creation, etc. If Government create jobs and produce food (and children!!) at the current rate, then I see a very, very dark future that most of us will most probably see and experience in our old age. Therefore the rate at which Mr Zuma procreates has everything to do with every citizen in this country, as it is and will continue to affect the quality of all of our lives.

Polygamy is NOT practiced by Mormons in America, but only by a tiny fringe who call themselves Mormons. A true Mormon - the vast majority - is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church abandoned polygamy in 1890 and any Mormon who so much as advocates the practice will be excommunicated.
lebogang 2/3/2010 8:45:30 AM
The only thing I see going on here is Zuma wanting to father the whole nation sooner than you know it he will be going around chosing his wives because he seemed to like them from older to younger so young girls you better start watching out the president is out to get you.
londi 2/3/2010 10:27:08 AM
Well, I see nothing wrong with polygamy but, my main concern is that we, as taxpayers, have to dig into our pockets to maintain these children whilst the recession is hiting us hard.
Mosebo 2/3/2010 11:51:46 AM
I just wonder where this concept of an "illegitimate child" is derived from: It was clearly formed by a Western-Christian view of conception. Acceptable behavior seems to be determined by Western or Christian people. To me, as an African every child is legitimate. There are many people who have children out of the institution of marriage, is that a sin?, if so according to who?. Zuma has never claimed to be a saint. It shows that he is normal like any other person. Lets avoid viewing things through Western-Christian spectacles and rather use our own African spectacles.
Moyahabo 2/3/2010 3:30:42 PM
Friends of Zuma who have girl children, watch out! JZ is out on a mission and you will be sorry like Mr Khoza.
Sue 2/4/2010 2:43:09 PM
@Masebo. Do you have kids? Daughters maybe? If not, sisters? Would you like Zuma to father a child with your daughter, sister? You are a sick person. Zuma is rubbish and so are the whole of ANC.
Makerese 2/6/2010 1:22:21 AM
South Africans complain too much, it's like we never see it coming. Overall we knew that JZ was a traditionalist, and today when all things break loose we started complaining. Let the man enjoy himself, and if he doesn't mind, do it again. Teach us a lesson JZ. I love you.
Makerese 2/6/2010 1:34:34 AM
South Africa, stop playing games. Many of you voted knowing that JZ is a traditionalist.
Paul 2/6/2010 5:12:29 AM
I'm totally appaulled at people who do not see the link between our president's sexual behaviour and HIV/AIDs. Nowhere in Zulu culture have I heard that one can sleep around while in a polygamous culture. The man has a corruptable character, remember this is no ordinary man from the townships: He is a president. Even if it could be defended as culture, we can't put the country at risk simply for culture. He is not the president of a selected few Zulu's (I am one by birth), but he's the president of whites, indians, coloureds and etc.
Pakane 2/6/2010 12:44:50 PM
Clearly, the nation needs to review its choice of political leaders. How could the masses elect a man who has more than one child out of the wedlock? Equally, how do schools accept Malema after he successfully failed schooling himself? Talk of animal farm and national stupor.
Lilian Matthews 2/6/2010 2:15:44 PM
Polygamy is an institutionalised marital arrangement securing rural men access to women's labour, physical and reproductive. Sleeping around with women, and without using a condom after admitting that he had sex with an HIV positive women (whom he was acquitted of raping), is not acceptable in any culture. The ANC NEC must recall Zuma now.
mzu man 2/7/2010 8:17:08 AM
JZ sure is no saint.... But tell me, is it the first time that we see or hear of a person who fathers a child out of wedlock? I don't think so... History tells us that King David got one man killed in battle so he could have the brothers' wife, not to mention King Slomon's escapades with his many wives etcetera. My position is simple, Let us not crucify umntwana wakwa Zuma for our own failings. We are not perfect, we all have our own weaknesses, so, why should we judge? Only GOD can judge uZuma not anyone else purporting to be saints. Cheers
darkwing 2/7/2010 7:22:58 PM
It's only us taxpayers really concerned about having to support this large family. The masses clearly don't worry about the HIV issue and will continue to support the man.
Lesego 2/8/2010 10:54:23 AM
Zuma must step down please
Lehlohonolo Sebidi 2/8/2010 2:39:16 PM
He just blew a lot of hot air. There is no apology in that statement. Just a case of the president showing us, common folk, the middle finger because, if he gets the opportunity again, down go the pants.
Neo 2/8/2010 7:54:15 PM
These days, public servants are told "get your act together or you will be fired." The same person who is saying that is busy looking for skirts. Big up to Lizeka Mda: City Press deputy editor for your honest opinion about this matter. I'm voting for you to be the next president and to lead this country since the poor guy is confused. Public officials don't even have time for sex, let alone proposing to every women they meet.
BigD 2/12/2010 12:41:56 PM
As a father, I would like to raise one concern. Being a child and growing up without your father is heart breaking. I really do not care about the amount of wives or girlfriends he has. Every woman in this country knows who he is, so they cannot say that they did not know that he was married. But the children, they do not have their daddy with them.
Jono 2/12/2010 1:12:56 PM
You know the saying "be carefull what you wish (or vote) for". The majority of South Africans voted for this man to be President. Who is letting who down?
LL PONN 2/13/2010 1:50:10 PM
De Klerk the former bantu education minister screwed a friend's wife, found her good, divorced his wife and married a friend's wife. I wonder who killed Mrs De Klerk.......what a world.
mentibuy 2/15/2010 8:29:38 AM
Every man has got a right to decide. You all know you have your own scandals(sexual). President or no president, he is still a human being like us with his personal weaknesses. Critisims wouldn't help . Let us work together and make things right. The president's privacy has been infringed here and people talk a lot. Mr President hard luck-some people cannot deal with their own issues, rather they concentrate on the others.
Zoleka 2/15/2010 2:03:44 PM
Let Zuma step down as a president. He has no self-respect. There is nothing we can learn from him. There are better people within the ANC, let them take over.
Mark 007 2/18/2010 11:39:10 AM
Yes, I agree. Great article and great comprehension. Zuma must step down, the sooner the better. We as South Africans are not only being humiliated by this man, but we are also being dissapointed. There are no moral values, not only when it comes to his 4 wives but also when it comes to how he runs this beautiful country of ours. Corruption, a messy healthcare system etc. And we all must be happy with it? meanwhile, we all are suffering. Get someone that is actually capable of running this country, and take it in the direction that it should go. I Love you all my fellow South Africans.
