Let’s first deal with justice and politicians

by By Carl Wille

I APPEAL to my fellow South Africans to unite and hold our leaders accountable for years of bad leadership, poverty, oppression, injustice and the abuse of power.

The accountability I am referring to begins from president FW de Klerk, his lily white Cabinet and the unfinished “deal” of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. That will lead us as a people to then deal with president Thabo Mbeki and his silent Cabinet, and eventually President Jacob Zuma and his loud mouth and materialistic Cabinet.

Let our message as united South Africans be absolutely clear that “we are watching you as a government and that you are accountable to us the citizens of the Republic of South Africa”.

We cannot move forward as a nation without first confronting and dealing with our troubled past. If we do not deal with that, history will simply repeat itself.

What is needed now, not later, is justice and accountability in relation to the wrongs committed in our past – more especially the culture of impunity that is currently destroying South Africa.

What is happening in South Africa is that our current and previous leaders are reluctant to deal with the past because they are also caught up in the past. What a shame.

I couldn't agree with you more. Transparency, accountability & fairness to all.

How do we do this, can anyone show us the way peacefully?

Carl, if you voted or not in 1994, you subrogated your "right" for "revenge" in favour of the New SA and its Constitution. There is no way turning back. The only way to deal with politicians is to ensure that you vote for the ones who are putting SA and its population first and not the popularists who cannot be called upon to account. By punishing former political leaders, you may enjoy an euphoria of reparation but it will not solve the mess in which the country is. Look forward and not back - you may change into a pillar of salt!

Very true. But - how do we fix it??
eric 2/21/2010 7:36:28 AM
Even if anyone can do this, those people they have power will try by all means to defend themselves. There is no justice in SA for high profile people.

History repeats itself regardless as the world proves over and over. This is a wish list article that ends up meaningless. Justice and politics are anathema in one phrase.

People wake up. You remove a seating government by voting them out, starting with the local elections. That is the only peaceful means, for us whose parents are in the rural areas it's a shame because they are seen as donkeys that are only going to plough fields and they (ANC) reap the fruits. What next? They are going to our parents and ask for their votes come election time.

We would like peace and reflection. I agree with the author we have not had good leadership. We have the power of the vote and we need to use it correctly, though we need to start the process now and not later. We need to involve all levels of communities and question what is it that they really want. The campaigns need to start now, get us involved we would like this very much. We are tired of the same government style from Nationalsits now to ANC they are the same. ME MYSLEF AND I. ANC LOOK IN THE MIRROR YOU WILL BE SHOCKED IF YOU ARE HONEST WITH YOURSELF.

Well said, its time us NORMAL citizens, " WHITE,BLACK,BROWN,GREEN,YELLOW " stand together, and VOTE these corrupt officilas out, we are the MAJORITY, use your VOTE wisely, this could be such an awsome SA if we get, respect, work ethics back, as the JAPANEES, and FAREAST countries, nothing comes easy, what you put in you get out. Pleass my fellow comrades,THINK before you vote, our beloved country is beeing RAPED, by the politicians. STAND UP, let YOUR VOTE COUNT.

The animal farm that SA has become has long gone to the dogs. It takes accountability to ensure accountability. Only accountable individuals like Carl, Redi Direko (hopefully marriage will not interfere with her roles in self-determination) and a few others accept, implement and persist in divulging politicians's selfishness. Who has started to lay a charge in court against politicians' expensive cars, secret access to self-enrichment schemes like tenders, etc? Who of us has questioned and sought redress of many unwarranted luxuries politicians, relatives and friends benefit from? Who of us researched and revealed probability of political connection outweigh level of educational qualifications? How can we recollect all fraudulently obtained riches from the thieves and let them go back to their initial financial statuses. Thugs need to repay, be prosecuted and arrested in prisons they overpowered on!

We have to be honest when we attempt to address what ails the country. It is intellectual dishonesty to pretend that our problems date only as far back as De Klerk! If we are going to deal with the past, then we have to deal with what it has been, what it has done to the country, what its effects and influence are, today. We all know that would never happen. Our selective memories are nothing but a defense mechanism employed to deny the truth and bury it under the carpet.
Moletjie 3/9/2010 2:27:12 AM
If there is one out there who still doubts that most of our politicians are as corrupt as any other politician in the Banana Republic, then you've got to check your head, something is wrong with you. We've been taken for a ride, and now we are truely learning from a bad experience. To vote this guys out, we have to come with a coalition that will go beyond party politics. My hope is that all other small parties will join forces and come up with a neutral name. For the very first time, let us vote because we are tired of all this daily misgoverning, and not because we want positions.

Thank you for sharing your insights. With the greatest of respect to Saints Madiba and Tutu. I think we have erred on the side of ostensible forgiveness and superficial reconciliation. Justice must prevail. Including economic and social justice. The culture of impunity must end. It is up to us to unite and hold our present and past leaders accountable. Time for action.
