Ministers are reckless with money

by By Stephen Twinoburyo

WHEN news surfaced that Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale had canned the R22-million play commissioned by his department, former minister, Lindiwe Sisulu’s spokesperson called into radio station 702 to say that she was not aware of this expenditure because there were accounting officers in the department. In short, the blame lay with the accounting officers.

While I don’t absolve the accounting officers of this massive waste I have come to believe that this department has a lot of money if R22?million can be spent on an inconsequential venture and the minister is not aware of it. I assume if this money had been spent on the 474 houses it could build, the minister would have taken notice and even reported on it.

It seems top officials in that department spend money with reckless abandon. While Sexwale was spending a night in a shack to experience the conditions of living among the poor, in just seven months the director-general and his deputy had spent close to R2?million on travelling and hotels. It is absolutely ridiculous, a complete disregard of those people who are pleading for houses, and takes the meaning out of Sexwale’s shack visit.

Sexwale runs a department with a hold on social stability in this country and has a big job cut out for him. If he wants the people at the bottom to receive the houses they’ve spent years waiting for, he needs to start with the rot surrounding him.

Housing delivery doesn’t seem to be a priority of those at the top. Maybe he should begin by assessing them on their record of delivery compared to their expenditure and way of living.

A minister is supposed to understand stewardship. Part of that responsibility is to be fully enlightened regarding financial matters, especially in the "small" matter of R22 million! So, either they're lying or they have incriminated themselves as poor leaders whom do not have a handle on their department.

Well, I think that the story is forward and straight to the point. A little bit short but, it serves its purpose which is to inform about Ministers that over spend. However, I would now like to read more about the Minister's shack visit and more about the travelling expenditure close to R2 Million. Our government really takes the poor people for granted. They dine in fancy restuarants, sleep in 5 star hotels and have top of the range office furniture. All at the expense of the poor tax payer. They should be exposed to the public, these culprits.

Ministers don't have the time to look into money issues, they are always in Parliament, meetings or on TV and Radio talk shows.Their Chief Financial Advisers should be fired.

I personally feel all ministers have a hard role to play in governance because they are meant to be politically minded and at the same time empathetical, and most times that never works out well. What I am merely trying to say (in little parable talk as possible), political leaders can never be able to run such humane bound posts because their duties are to support party policies. Take example from countries like UK, they have Construction Professionals as advisers to ministers. Minister runs policies, Professionals ensure work is done and up to standard. If everything is "politicaly" run, every year after the election will be spent on a policy shift and resettlement of ministers in their "jobs", new cars, who wasted what on the past term etc.Solution, Ministers should worry about their promises to the people who elected them and appoint professionals to ensure all work can be done.Asa Walesa Mazomba

"Ministers are reckless with Money" : The Understatement of the century! The only word missing is "Our", as in "Ministers are reckless with OUR money". This rubbish that they are too important to be bothered with mundane things such as who spends what, is a load of tripe! It is their job, their responsibility, their duty to KNOW what is going on in their departments. We are paying them a LOT of money (not that I want to, but they take it anyway) and all they ever do is shrug their shoulders and deny deny deny. Gutless, selfish and showing complete disregard for the millions who placed such faith in them. None of them are homeless, or carless and they don't have to go to provincial hospitals for medical care. They don't have to live with the ever present violent crime because they've made sure that we pay for their bodyguards, of which they all have plenty. Their children go to private schools and are assured of tertiary education while the average, honest, tax-paying man in the street gets poorer by the day. They have dumped this beautiful country into the third world, and we are all (this not a race issue) suffering for their greed and selfishness.

ANC ministers are not even worthy to be called that! They are a joke and it is proven everyday!
nonot 12/13/2009 12:05:03 PM
Jhet. Joke or not, they are your bosses. Deal with it.

All ministers are the same. The Irish Catholic ministers are raping children, the South African political variety plundering the coffers. Even the Commy Ministers are driving luxury German cars.

Idiot! They were voted into serve! They are uselessly wasting the tax payers money and living the high life. Oh I forgot, you don't pay tax!
