We can't wait

THIS week has marked yet another milestone on the road to the 2010 Fifa World Cup next June when the last of the 32 nations qualified for the event.
There may still be murmurings in Ireland at the controversial way that France pipped them to the finals – a blatant handball helped them get the deciding goal – but for the rest of the stakeholders, there’s very little to complain about.
Seventeen of the top 20 countries according to Fifa’s world rankings will be making the trip to our shores, and that is fantastic – not just for Fifa but for television broadcasters and the fans.
It’s in everyone’s interest to have the glamour teams and the superstars at the premier tournament of the sport.
This week we go below 200 days in the countdown and the World Cup programme is chock-a-block with events for South Africa to shine.
In a week 2?000 representatives of the international media and 2?000 guests will converge in Cape Town for the groups draw on December 4. The size of the global television audience for the draw is equal to that for a World Cup game.
South Africans had better be wide awake because a day later the next batch of match tickets will be made available for purchase and supporters of the teams that qualified will snap them up.
As you will see in City Press from now on, “We can’t wait!”
