Blacks in bondage

2010-04-11 13:00

Venterdorp is South Africa. If we want to understand South Africa, then we need to look more closely at Ventersdorp, a town that springs up at you in the heart of the North West maize belt.

I grew up in Potchefstroom on the Haagners farm, a stone’s throw away from Ventersdorp.

This dorpie eloquently tells the story of the criminal neglect of black people by the ANC government in the past 16 years. Go see for yourself the demeanour of black residents. They are tense and fearful, a powerful symbol of black powerlessness, because the ruling party has made a pact with the devil.

Until his death, Eugene Terre’Blanche and his gun-toting men were allowed to spread terror. Almost every black person who lives around Ventersdorp knows the wrath of the AWB. In 1997, a young black mayor of Ventersdorp, Kabelo Oupakie Mashi, a staunch member of the SACP, stood up against the bullies of Ventersdorp.

He transformed budgets, cajoled the local criminal justice system to take racist violence seriously, and attempted to bring freedom to Ventersdorp.

Mashi was abducted and murdered, his body left in the veld. Witnesses were openly intimidated and the murder remains unsolved. If a mayor can be killed for challenging white power and the perpetrators can get away with it, what chance do ordinary mortals have?

Terre’Blanche had carte blanche to terrorise black people.

When he got out of jail , the first people to publicly and warmly welcome him back were the ANC and the SACP.

Government accepted the status quo as long as the AWB didn’t extend its reign of white terror too far beyond North West.

In Potchefstroom, known AWB members such as Pieter and Bob Haagners joined the ANC and continued their terror, now under the protection of the people’s movement. The vicious Jan Serfontein became an ANC MP and later an MEC in North West.

Growing up, I remember that when Terre’Blanche came to town blacks would clear out. “Ons sal nie ons land terug koop nie; ons het dit klaar gekoop met die bloed van ons mense,” the radio would bellow.

There is no evidence that Luthuli House was ever going to come down and liberate Ventersdorp’s black slaves. Black life in Ventersdorp was destined to continue in morbid fearfulness with new and old scars of white supremacy.

But that changed with the killing of Terre’Blanche. I went to Ventersdorp this week in solidarity with the accused to ensure that they were not lynched.

We stand sandwiched between the local magistrates court and the Boer monuments that bear the names of the Afrikaner patriarchs who inspire the AWB. They are ugly, cheap and fragile. It’s as if they represent a memory that is slowly fading away.

Young blacks stand on top of the monuments with the hope of getting a glimpse at the accused. We wait for hours in the sun. Then, as the first accused, barefoot like Jesus Christ, is pushed into the Casspir, the crowd breaks out as one: “Amandla! Hero! Hero! Hero!” It was a moment of total identification with those accused of murdering ET. They were saying: “If you didn’t see the faces of the accused,it’s OK, you have seen our faces. We are the accused!”

We are seeing a new kind of black youth – one pushed into a corner. Whoever murdered ET is seen, here, as a hero bigger than those who went to exile or spent time breaking stones on Robben Island. This is what one hears from the people of Tshing. ET was the ultimate symbol of white supremacy, but he was killed by mere children.

What kind of nation allows its children to become murderers in order to defend themselves? Why was a 15-year-old a farm labourer? Why did he need to toil in order to live?

This is how life is in Ventersdorp and its surrounds. Blacks live in servitude.

Tshing, like all townships, is still a reserve for cheap labour for ET and his men.

It’s a crying shame that in the past 16 years of democracy, only 6% of the land has been transferred to blacks.

More than a million farm workers have been evicted from land since 1994. As long as blacks remain landless, they remain subjected to racism.

Malema’s reckless rhetoric, in this context, is a cruel manoeuvre for self-enrichment. The ANC doesn’t need to implore anyone to kill the Boer. It must simply use its political power to change things. The problem is not the white racists, but the refusal of the ANC to use its political mandate to end racism. The singing of militant liberation songs in an attempt to voodoo the people is not the solution. The solution to ending racism lies in ending the unequal economic power relations. It’s much simpler than BEE and tenders.

When I go to Ventersdorp, I see a microcosm of South Africa – racist, untransformed, supremacist.

  • Press Ombudsman
Ventersdorp article breached Press Code

Mr George Annandale complained to the Press Ombudsman about an article in City Press written by Andile Mngxitama and published on April 11 2010, headlined Blacks in bondage. The Ombudsman’s offices note that Mngxitama wrote the article in his personal capacity and that it was in no way related to his fulltime work.

According to the complaint, the article falsely implied that former Ventersdorp mayor Kabelo Mashi was murdered by white rightwing extremists and, further, that the article is aimed at the propagation of racial hatred.

The Press Ombudsman found that it was unreasonable and irresponsible for Mngxitama to present as a fact the allegation that Mashi’s murder remains unsolved, whilst not mentioning the subsequent court case in which Bota Monatle was convicted of the murder. Although the Ombudsman accepted that some may still regard Mashi’s murder as controversial, he found that the article breached the Press Code in failing to take fair account of all the available facts whilst commenting on them (Press Code, Art. 4.3).

The Ombudsman conceded that the publication in City Press two weeks later of an article by James Myburgh, which set out the facts around the court case in detail, considerably balanced out the reporting.

Mr Annandale’s complaint that the article was aimed at propagating racial hatred was dismissed. The Ombudsman found that although the article contains highly critical views on the AWB, it does not constitute incitement to cause harm nor does it contain denigratory references to people’s race, colour or ethnicity.

The full ruling can be found on Press Council.

Andile...isn't it now the golden moment for black people to start to stand on their own two feet? Why do people like you always look to the white man to get you out of what ever situation? Why not encourage people to buy their own farms and farm it productively? Why not encourage small business enterprises? We are all equal and each and every one of us has got a place in the sun. But why, oh why do you - and your same-minded friends - think that once you've got the economic power the world would be rosy? As usual there is no initiative! Stand Up Man! Be Counted! Don't expect, create! Honestly...it is people like you that give me and my fellow Black South Africans a bad name!
MAKHUBELE 4/12/2010 1:58:03 PM
CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME THIS? WHY DO 15 MIL. ZIMBABWIANS, ALL OF THEM LANDOWNERS OF ZIMBABWE, LIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA? STEALING OUR JOBS AFTER THEY HAVE TAKEN THE FARMS IN ZIM? DON'T YOU THINK THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO THEIR NEWLY AQUIRED LAND AND WORK ON IT AFTER THEY HAVE SUCCESFULLY GRABBED IT. PLEASE TELL ME

Bravo! These truths need to be stated in the clear, unequivocal way you've done here. Why is anybody surprised that Terre'Blanche has been murdered? Whether actual sodomy was involved or not, the guy had sodomised the minds of the true owners of the land in South Africa. He went to jail for assaulting one. His followers threw a black man alive to lions. They also tied a black man to the back of a truck and drove around, with him trailing behind. The white racists ought to know that actions speak louder than words. If our leaders want us to embrace them as brothers and they unleash sjamboks on us, no-one will tell us to repudiate the advice of our leaders. I hope they read your piece and understand it.

1) The North-West is like a ghost town because the ANC nationalised mineral rights and chased off investors in the mining industry. 2) Who put the massive bureaucracy in place to transfer land and who is running it? The Department is being completely mismanaged. 3) Not only has the ANC's land policies made South Africa a nett food importer and so threatened our food security, most of the farms that have been transferred are now wastelands. "As long as blacks remain landless, they remain subjected to racism." This, Andile, is but one non-sequitor. 4)Most whites pay 60c of every Rand they earn in tax to ensure a better life for all. Who is to blame that the ANC pisses that money away? How much does Andile contribute? No, Andile wants to see immediate consumption of all capital. What is going to finance old-age pensions the day after? And child grants? Grow up, Andile!

Excellent article! This is why I sometimes think that while Mugabe has messed up, he at least managed to change the social order in Zimbabwe. Such a thing cannot happen in Zimbabwe. I hope the ANC leadership will hear your voice and do something about this pathetic situation that black South Africans find themselves in. -- Taku

Lets stand for the truth, the man's death has brought peace of mind to enslaved Black folks whose governments still beg and worship the Boers, just the same as in my Country, Namibia. These people have no respect for Black folks whatsoever, I remember Malcom X! I can't believe Namibia is still prosecuting a man who once held a mere poster reading "kill all white" if the same has not only been said but executed against Namibians.
OMG 4/13/2010 11:34:49 AM
Well, if ever I have read a racist article, this was it. Just because a group of white supremacists abuse their labourers, all whites are racist, yet you are able to make comments such as "the first accused, barefoot like Jesus Christ", and think it's a good comparison? Jesus NEVER KILLED ANYONE. Or "What kind of nation allows its children to become murderers in order to defend themselves?" What will you say when an adult black man illegally enters MY home and I kill him in self defence? Am I a white supremacists murderer?
jsimmons 4/13/2010 12:27:03 PM
You are generalising in a big way. Many whites people openly and privately condemn racism, and the numbers are growing. You liken an accused murderer to Jesus? You assume the death of Mashi was orchestrated by whites while there is no proof, and the case remains unresolved. Maybe you see racism everywhere you look because racism defines your own mind, and allows you to see only in black and white!
Thandiwe 4/13/2010 12:35:44 PM
Very true indeed one of the best articles I've read on this matter, there is no need to prey on the vulnerabilities of the marginalised the ANC needs to act to end poverty through an improved education system that's the only way black communities like these can break these viscious cycles of poverty that leave them vulnerable to allsorts of abuses
LC 4/13/2010 12:56:10 PM
How nice for you to stereotype all white South Africans, based on ET. I suppose then I can say that all black South Africans have the same view as Julius Malema? How crazy to compare a murderer with Jesus Christ, these two men are no ones saviours, they brutally killed another human being. Murder is wrong and cannot be justified. How ignorant to assume that giving land to anyone will automatically reduce the injustice caused to any race in SA, in fact why is that never adressed, what about the other races in this country, when will their needs be heard? I honestly hope that SA will change eventually, that everyone will stop blame shifting and adress the realy issues...and that stereotyping based on skin color will stop, and yes, that the promises made by the leaders of the country will finally be carried out (to the benefit of everyone), not because of out side pressure, but because it's the right thing to do.
dawood 4/13/2010 12:57:59 PM
A thought provovoking article. I was shocked to read that apartheid still exists in its ugly form. The ANC shamelessly let events go by without intervention. The maintstrem media neglects to inform the public of what really is the status quo on these hidden dorpies. They must be exposed.
Really 4/13/2010 1:13:57 PM
Blacks will remain poor, since 1904 there has been a 11 fold increase in population numbers fueled by agricultural progress, attributable to white farmers. Whites on the other hand had only a 4 fold increase. There are 9 blacks to every 1 white today. Blacks own 41.2% of income (work, social grants, interest, dividends) and whites 45.3%. Even it out and the major problem facing blacks is not "being landless" but a population boom, parents can't provide care or pass wealth on for their children. Wealth is spread too thinly. Now blacks are looking at whites thinking their economic exclusion is only due to Apartheid. In 1904 the playing field was pretty level; whites had scorched earth and extermination to deal with. Then we built up for ourselves and excluded others who didn't look after themselves.
neil 4/13/2010 9:36:49 PM
In this article people are described as black slaves, I myself have been a white slave all my life so were all my relatives. It is a simple case of good and bad, it always will be, colour is a distraction. Think Mugabee. He has ruined his country.
jo bern 4/13/2010 9:48:10 PM
How can you put a murderer and Jesus Christ in the same context? Please answer that! I am not even sure why this report is allowed in City Press.
Qminati 4/13/2010 10:48:20 PM
I fully concur!

John Ojoye 4/14/2010 10:17:08 AM
I beleive what South Africans needs is reconciliation. SA have suffered enough throughout the aparthied period, its time to end the mayhem and jointly build an endurung SA, a truelly 'rainbow state'.
sed 4/14/2010 10:35:57 AM
The truth can never be covered up. There is a lot of it in this article. .. and yes to some extent the accused are seen as Messiahs for the action of removing a long standing "devil thorn". After all, it is this very "devil thorn" that together with its inbred supremacist used the bible to justify their actions is it not??
Hilaryisabel 4/14/2010 10:45:40 AM
I agree with this article and I am white. But every time I venture too far from the big cities I feel like I am returning the the old South Africa - the attitudes of black and white people all over remain un-transformed. I find it scary to do the road trip from jhb to ct because the attitudes of men to women are also not transformed. Only in the big cities and only in certain areas can you feel that things have changed. At work I feel like I am not valuable either but that was the same under the old regime. I did not know that some of the old murderers are members of the ANC - shame on them for accepting them into their ranks - forgiveness is fine but that is too much.
JCD 4/14/2010 11:07:56 AM
Your perspective in typical ANC. You people will never let appartheid or the white people be in peace, because you need something to make the world feel sorry for you. When black people kill whites it is because they are so called oppressed. Malema needs to sing freedom songs. For what. The balcks have been freed 15 years ago. It is the white people of this country that need to start sing freedom songs and also to take some drastic actions to free themselves from the Blcak oppression of this Goverment.

I fully agree with John but that to happen those that stole our property must return it before we talk of reconciliation. The first step of reconciliation is recognition of the fact that whites stole from us and only they have return our porperty we should begin the process of reconciliation and forgiviness.

“Barefoot like Jesus Christ” : ... oh please???
“Only 6% of land transferred to blacks” : ... you do know that 70% of the land transferred to blacks is not worked and lies waste???
“More than a million farm workers have been evicted from land since 1994" : ... this is the direct result of blacks killing off R3800+ farmers and thereby destroying the livelihood of farm workers???
“Malema’s reckless rhetoric, in this context, is a cruel manoeuvre for self-enrichment” : ... You do know that Malema embodies exactly how the whites see blacks???
“Why was a 15-year-old a farm labourer?” : ... he was born to a desperately poor mother and a nomadic and absent seed donor. Do white orphans go around killing black farmers? No-one believes the story about the fight over money. Stop making excuses for blacks. If the ANC is given R1000 trillion dollars today, the socio-economic desperation of the blacks will not change ... only the ruler-class ANC (and the rulers of its allied parties) will benefit. You see, historically the blacks in Africa know only one type of rule, and that is to be ruled by a tribal warlord who decides what they eat, when they eat, how much they eat, and where they eat. This is exactly why Malema is so revered/worshipped. As a warlord (singing war songs) they do not mind him living in luxury while they wait for the crumbs from his table. So long as they do not need to go and work for the crumbs. Sorry, Andile, that is the way it is. There is a world in your head, and then there is the real world ...

Wait till the whites start pushing back all over SA. In our history we always fought the coward masses and came out victors. It will happen again...God of Israel is on our side..Ecclesiates 10:2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left
Baba 4/14/2010 3:27:54 PM
I disagree with Lynette. Andile is not the best journalist but the most honest you will find out there. But I'm not writing to defend the man but to state my opinion. I believe SA has never stepped on the right path since the implementation of apartheid policies. Our reconciliation is fake because to this day we(both black and white)still hate each other. And please don't give me that story of you having black or white friends because it's already played out like cassette tapes. We all know how we honestly feel about each other. What's happening in Vendersdorp is just a sneak peek of what's happening in our minds. How do we get on the right path? Well, fairness and equality. Let's equally share what this country has to offer to all its citizens starting with the land. I don't want to get into details because so many has already sang this song. Some are praying that our country don't follow steps of other African countries like Zim but with the pace of transformation I doubt if their prayers will be answered in time.
Danie 4/14/2010 3:33:44 PM
Tebogo you don't know your history. The Bushmen was here long before you. Your forefather came from the dark middle of Africa and stole their land. So dont point fingers
realist 4/14/2010 3:50:24 PM
Factually incorrect, racist and bias. Blatantly blaming whites for everything that goes wrong. Accepting responsibility is your most serious drawback. Accept that the police force could not solve the murder and don't blame the AWB. Accept that those three whites that went over to the ANC are mere human beings that want to contribute and are not "vicious" racist. Accept that your remark.."barefoot like Jesus Christ" should have been "barefoot like the devil" to reflect their deeds. Accept that your heroes that kill rape and slaughter whites will push whites over the edge...... and remember what happened in 1838 when something similar happened after the whites bought land legally from Dingaan. We need to sideline radicals and ignore radicals....both black and white......like you.
LouiseLondon 4/14/2010 4:39:17 PM

FORGET the past, get out there and work, NO ANC, NP, or other party will help you, they have your vote and your money, they only PROMISE and look after thier BUDDIES/FRIENDS. WAKE up, JA ek is n RYK AFRIKANER,through hard work, NOT TOY TOYING and will allways be.

Excellent article, and quite correct, when are the people of South Africa going to act as one against the ANC and the AWB? Take the power, it's high time.
Elvira Bothma 4/14/2010 9:18:07 PM
The terrible situation in South Africa is 100% the ANC's doing. If the ANC provided housing, jobs etc. (as they promised) everybody would have been happy but instead the whole country is falling apart. There is more 'apartheid' in South Africa NOW than there has EVER been before !! And that is a FACT.
Jimmy 4/15/2010 5:52:02 AM
As an Australian living in South Africa, my simple observation is that South Africa is in Economic decline. The amount of generational wealth that is pouring into Australia from South Africa is enormous. Capital has legs and Aussie banks, business and the property market are benefiting from South Africa's failure. This capital growth creates jobs and lots of them. We have less then 5% unemployment and and our assets are doubling in value every two to three years. Australia's mineral and natural resources are unfathomable and we are closer to the growth centers of India, China and Indonesia. The world doesn't need South Africa's mines anymore and cheap talk of nationalization puts your country at even a greater disadvantage and this puts Australia way out in front. This brings me to my point. The fact is, South Africa in the proverbly sense got punched out economically and that was due to poor African leadership, corruption and crime. I believe the international consensus is that South Africa has blown it.However, what it does still have beyond its natural beauty is a lot of good farmland that can still feed its people. Andile if those farms fall into decline the people of South Africa are going to starve to death in there millions. Maybe in your position you think the hand of death is still a long way off from touching you and your family but not so for the poor of this country. Your another self proclaimed prophet that is prepared to let many die so you can act out revenge on white farmers. It's absurd but hey it's Africa. South Africa had it's moment in the spot light and that was due to the old great one Nelson Mandela, De Klerk and the all African good guy Desmond Tutu. Those men saved your country, next time you won't be so lucky!
John 4/15/2010 7:51:20 AM
I have now seen the brutal face of racism and it is not white anymore.
Baba 4/15/2010 9:15:01 AM
It will be absolutely wrong to cast blames to only one race especially the whites. Personally, I think all races in SA have underperformed in assuring that our democracy reflect our vision. But I have a problem with white people who want to shift their own part of blame to other races. I mean it's fact, apartheid crippled black people and its after effects still continue to do that. It will be ignorant and plainly plain stupid to think 16 years of democracy will wipe out all the cruelty, injustice, discrimination and hatred apartheid inflicted on black people. With that said, blacks also need to stop blaming everything on the past and do for themselves. We know we can do better. The blame game won't get us where we want to go. Doing for ourselves will earn us the respect we derseve. At the end of the day, Africa is for Africans and we all know what that means. Modimo ga se setlaela. We will eventually get what belongs to us!!!
yebo 4/15/2010 12:55:51 PM
Shame, you poor black people. 16 years on and you still cant stand on your own feet. Still wants everything to be given to you on a platter. With this attitude you are going to stay barefoot for the rest of your life. even your own black race are starting to realize that the only way out of poverty is to ask the white man for help. Soon you will do the same.
Lesetja 4/15/2010 2:43:38 PM
Lets take all the land. It is the only way. Believe me, it will come, one day.Your Zim scare tactics are not working. If we all have to go down before we all rise, so be it. You cannot have only the Black man down, in his own country. Lets be like a veld fire: get rid of all this filth and lets all start from scratch. Or rather, just take the land. We will anyway.
Hendrik 4/15/2010 11:36:43 PM
What a lot of bull**** has Andile Mngxitama written here. Stop blaming the whites for everything that goes wrong! Take responsibility for your own lives. Look at the rest of Africa, is that also the fault of the Afrikaners? As long as you keep on blaming others for your own self-made problems, you will never overcome them. Ask any rehabilitated alcoholist - healing starts with admitting you have a problem. The difference between poor blacks today and poor Africaners after the Anglo-Boor war is that the Afrikaners had the drive and will to pick themselves up by their shoelaces. They were poor, but their values remained intact. Sadly the moral fiber of our country disintegrated completely today - under the leadership of the ANC all is currupt and we have created an environment where no personal responsibility is taken for ones' own fate. "The government must give . . ."

southboiafrica 4/16/2010 8:40:33 PM
I like you Andile, fall under the classification of black. To think that you represent an educated and liberated black person of democratic South Africa is a sad representation of how poorly we've advanced since the days of apartheid. Firstly, your comparison of a murderer, to Jesus Christ is a reflection of your lack of respect and dignity. Black people have been free for the last 15 years, and have had the support of systems such as BEE. Fair enough, a large portion of the black population remains in poverty, but that is not an excuse to stereotype whites, and classify them all as racist. It is our own people's greed, and personally motivated agenda's that has led to the slow development of the black community. Please Andile, the next time you post an article, use it as an reflection to how black's have developed and grown, instead of invoking sympathy, pity and disgust from people.
LL PONN 4/16/2010 10:42:19 PM
Andile you're very right the ANC have been given the mandate to improve the lives of Africans in this country but have been unable becauce they're under the control of ANGLO AMERICAN, BILLITON, SASOL, DE-BEERS, RUPPERT, ACKERMAN, CIA, MOSSAD, M15 etc. However they've the power to break the mold but they've no political will. Zuma should talk to Hugo Chavez and learn one or two things on change management. It is sickening to note that there are places in SA where Africans fear SETTLERS 16 years after independence.
Truth hurts 4/17/2010 5:56:26 PM
Blacks aren't down because whites stole their land. (Whites did not steal the land, Piet Retief wanted to buy or lease and was murdered during the "negotiations"; in any case blacks stole the land from the San, Khoi and each other). Afrikaners owned land, mismanaged it and help create the poor white problem, as investigated by the Carnegie Commission) Some blacks are down because: (1) they believe this rubbish (2) they would rather exonerate themselves with the myth of their stolen fortune than work as people do in the rest of the world (3) the land could no longer support them - the population growth (and bad farming practice) forced many off the land and into the cities long before apartheid.(4) When the rest of the country was educating their children, they chose violence before education.Other black have taken the chips off their shoulders, put their shoulders to the wheel, worked, earned and are par with their coloured, Indian and white fellow-countrymen.It's up to each black to decide which group he or she wishes to belong to. Other race groups have to make the same choice, which is why there are drop-outs and poor from all races.
Tumi 4/20/2010 5:26:39 PM
We need more people like Andile to express black problems for black people in a black way without having to apologize to anyone for what one is going to say. Aluta continua! Brilliant Andile
Liar Liar 4/23/2010 1:55:02 PM
Andile appears to be a liar - Mashi's murderer was not only found and convicted - he was another black man who murdered the mayor in a dispute about money. See here http://www.politicsweb.co.za/politicsweb/view/politicsweb/en/page71619?oid=172779&sn=Detail. Shame on you City Press and News24

Why am I not surprised.
Journalism Teacher 4/24/2010 12:04:26 PM
Andile, check your own newspapers previous issues. It reported that Mashi's murderer was a black colleague who was owed money for a diamond deal. He was caught after 5 days and sentenced to 25 years. But hey, don't let a silly thing like facts reported in your very own newspaper get in the way of a good story.
Vusi Nxumalo 4/24/2010 1:08:44 PM
All the JuJu supporters, get a job and work for that what you want.
malsped 4/25/2010 11:00:42 PM
Leave aside, for a moment, the ideological argument in this article. There are serious inaccuracies of fact: Mashi's murder is not unsolved. The murderer was not white or AWB. He was a black collague of Mashi's who murdered him for a few thousand rand and stole his car. He pleaded guilty, was convicted, and is currently serving a 20-year sentence. The facts of the case and the conviction were extensively reported in SA media at the time. Whatever the merits or demerits of Mngxitama's opinions are (and we know there continue to be grave inequalities and racial divisions in SA, not just in Ventersdorp), he (and City Press) have done a disservice to the people of this country and should apologise for publishing untruths and racially inflammatory distortions.

Johannes Bota Monatle confessed to the murder of Philip Kabelo Mashi and was sentenced to twenty years in prison for murder and five years for robbery. In fact, on Sunday March 28 1999 City Press itself reported that after "an intensive four day manhunt by police Monatle was found and, according to police, pointed out Mashi's maggot-infested body, the spot where he threw away Mashi's cellphone and the knife suspected to be the murder weapon." This article is substandard journalism by Andile Mngxitama, and substandard editing by the newspaper which all along had the true facts in its files.

Andile, Could you please, please try and find these things called "facts" before you embarrass yourself and this paper any more. Seriously, you're a disgrace. The killer of your holy Mayor was jailed a long ago. - http://www.politicsweb.co.za/politicsweb/view/politicsweb/en/page71619?oid=172779&sn=Detail

This article is pure lies.
Deon van Zyl 4/26/2010 10:20:31 AM
This article states categorically that Mashi's murder remains unsolved. The writer further opines that it was the work of the AWB. How does this sit with the fact that Johannes Monatle, a person known to the deceased, was convicted of the murder?
ps 4/26/2010 10:38:06 AM
Johannes Bota Monatle was convicted of Mayor Mashi's murder; the result of an illegal diamond deal gone wrong. If you were even remotely interested in telling the truth you would have known this. Instead you make up a story to suit your agenda. You would fit in well as a staffer on the Zim Herald.

I do not understand this land thing. Most blacks, like whites, only want jobs, homes, good salaries, good a education for their kids. How is land belonging to a black or white farmer going to help us in archiving this? Most of us, modern day people black and white, are not farmers. Farming to me is a business like Pick 'n Pay. It will be interesting to see how much land is going to be owned by the state? Why is that not given to new farmers? Do we blacks not have any pride? Why must we always want to grab everything? I would rather have white farmers produce food for my children than have Malema and his friends given free farms or land.
TheTruth 4/27/2010 10:47:23 AM
Well, Andile's outright lies and fabrications are exposed for those who wish to open their eyes to the truth. www.citypress.co.za/Columnists/GuestColumnist/Writers-view-of-Mashi-case-ignored-facts-20100424
Realist100 4/27/2010 5:26:16 PM
Andile you are stirring up race hate!! If you were intelligent enough you would have done research and established the facts and that is that Mayor Mashi was involved in illegal diamond trade and was killed by his black friend. I dare you to do the research and write the truth. Why are you dishonest?
Mpho 4/27/2010 11:22:51 PM
Andile's story might be short on facts, but it is not too far from the truth, white supremacy still persists, not only in Ventersdorp but in the whole country. Phumi my black sister, you are missing the point, have you no pride, how can you say that you would rather have white farmers produce food for your children. If you control the land you control an important piece of the economy.
Leon 4/28/2010 4:05:36 PM
Mpho, Short on facts? lets rather say full of lies! The question we should rather ask is why does the writer blatantly lie (not distort) the truth around the murder of Mashi?. The killer (Bota Monatle) was caught within weeks, after pointing out the body to police. Is he trying to make up an excuse for murder? and I suppose more importanantly. Should there ever be an excuse for murder ?
LL PONN 4/29/2010 12:27:08 AM
The problem with Africans is that they're too tolerant of Settlers. They need to wake up and take control of economic affairs through whatever means. You can't be dictated to in your country.
Malachite 4/29/2010 4:33:35 PM
There are absolutely no black racists.
Corne 7/13/2010 9:16:43 AM
It is not true that he was killed by whites, he was killed by and "African". See ombudsman.
Francois 7/13/2010 1:57:14 PM
Accused walked barefoot like Jesus Christ? When anyone makes a comparison like this (criminals become like Jesus, or Zuma the Black Jesus etc) then you know that they need mental help and fast. In what sort of country do we live where murders are being seen as blessings and perpetrators hailed as heroes? This new SA has become EVIL under which rule? Not even Apartheid was this evil!
John 7/13/2010 4:15:52 PM
Toiling? Bondage? It’s time to get off the lazy backside and work instead of blaming whites or long-gone apartheid. You are lucky SA agriculture has not yet mechanised fully – when it does there won’t be any bondage for you.
Another M in the making? 7/13/2010 10:04:19 PM
Well well well. If I ever, the same man who is organising the distribution of those horrid Blackwash pamphlets urging black township dwellers to vent their anger on “settlers” and not the foreigners? Ikwere kwere sonke (we are foreigners too) or whatever?
Jack Kukard 7/14/2010 1:57:54 PM
I am white. I stole nothing from blacks. I worked for my stuff; maybe all of you should start doing the same. And if you people call a murderer a hero then you are all fools.
