An alleged serial rapist who faces 33 counts of rape and 33 of attempted murder is a convicted rapist.
The man, who appeared in the Alberton Magistrates Court today, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1995. He was released in 2005.
He was arrested on the East Rand for allegedly raping girls between the ages of 10 and 14 years on Tuesday, Sapa reported.
“This happened after one of the victims followed him to his place of residence and later informed the investigating officer,” said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.
The girls were allegedly lured to an open veld and raped between 2007 and 2011.
The media has been barred from naming or photographing the accused, pending more identity parades.
The alleged serial rapist at first indicated that he would conduct his own defence, but later said that he would make use of legal aid and eventually appoint his own lawyer after he was advised against conducting his own defence.
The case was postponed until next Friday for further investigation. The State is opposing bail.
