Four North West municipalities are being investigated over fraudulent payments to companies for services that never took place, the Sowetan reported.
According to the report, Special Investigating Unit boss Willie Hofmeyr briefed North West premier Maureen Modiselle in Mafikeng over the corruption in Madibeng (Brits), Greater Taung (Vryburg), Mafikeng and Ventersdorp municipalities.
Provincial spokesperson Matshube Mfoloe was quoted as saying there were at least 28 cases of fraud and theft being investigated that involved amounts ranging from R61 000 to R30 million.
“Eighty three payments of more than R10.3 million were made to two companies using the same invoice number for the installation of high mast lights by Madibeng municipality,” Mfoloe said.
Modiselle ordered the investigation into corruption in the municipalities last November.
