Juju can’t ‘shoot boer’ anymore, but supporters still do

Barely half an hour after the court banned the “shoot the boer” song, Julius Malema supporters were singing it in front of the same court.
Juju supporters went as far as insulting AfriForum and “Boers” in general.
“Boers killed our Chris Hani,” they sang pointing fingers at AfriForum members.
Equality Court Judge Colin Lamont ruled that the song constituted hate speech.
He interdicted Malema from singing the song. He also ordered him to pay some of the costs of the complainant, AfriForum.
As Lamont delivered his judgment, Malema’s allies in court looked at each other with disbelief.
The league’s secretary-general, Sindiso Magaqa, said they would consult with their lawyers and decide a way forward.
“The ANC songs have been banned. Ultimately, we will defend the heritage of the ANC,” he said.
Malema’s deputy, Ronald Lamola, said the ruling had serious implications for the Constitution and the future of the country.
On the other hand, AfriForum was delighted at the outcome.
“This is not a victory of AfriForum over Malema. It is the victory for justice and tolerance of different races,” said AfriForum’s chief executive, Kallie Kriel.
The ANC is yet to comment on the matter.
The party had dispatched heavyweights like Gwede Mantashe, Collins Chabane and Derek Hanekom to defend Malema.
Meanwhile, Malema’s disciplinary committee hearing for misconduct and alleged breaching of ANC constitution continues tomorrow.
Malema could be suspended or expelled from the governing party.
