Ten people bombed an ATM in Tlhabane near Rustenburg and fled with an undisclosed amount of money, according to North West police.
When police arrived on the scene the group opened fire on them, said Brigadier Thulane Ngubane. They then fled in a white Nissan bakkie.
The bakkie was later found abandoned next to the Eskom offices in Tlhabane. It had been reported stolen in Soweto on Wednesday.
The robbers were seen getting into a minibus with no number plates, said Ngubane. No one was injured and no arrests had been made.
