Two automated teller machines (ATMs) have been blown up during an attempted robbery at the Absa bank in Libode, near Mthatha, Eastern Cape.
Patrolling police heard the sounds of explosions around 11pm yesterday and raced to the scene, Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said today.
“The robbers saw the officers coming and fled without taking the money,” he said.
“The police are still gathering evidence in order to determine the type of devices used to blow the machines.”
One machine was completely destroyed while the other was slightly damaged.
Fatyela said an attempted robbery or an ATM bombing docket would be opened.
