A fine way to fly the racing flag

Yesterday’s J&B Met brought out the fashionistas and aspiring socialites.

The mullet dress, with its short front and long back, proved to be a popular style at yesterday’s J&B Met – and very tricky to handle with the notorious Cape winds in attendance.

Social butterfly Jennifer Su was one of the first to experience the mullet/wind mishap when her fuchsia Hip Hop dress didn’t play nice, giving us a peek of her knickers as she posed for photographs.

Another one who fell for the fashion fad was Live Amp presenter Luthando Shosha, who looked stunning in the Laz Yani purple number in which she collaborated.

“We followed the made-to-fly theme by having the bird motif on the dress as well as the embellished feather shoulder. I like studs so we added those for a bit of edge,” she said while negotiating the train and pulling on the mini part of the gown.

The made-to-fly theme was taken literally by most punters and fashionistas, with many men and women sporting feather embellishments and fairy wings.

Top Billing presenter Jeannie D looked like a futuristic glamazon in her golden mini with fierce winged shoulders. She was only rivalled by cohost Bonang Matheba in a slim fit white mesh dress with embroidery.

Her wings came courtesy of strategically placed extra material. While it wasn’t the best Gert-Johan Coetzee dress she’s ever worn, her sex appeal proved bigger than the outfit.

Then again, this is a woman who can make a black rubbish bag look hot.

The designer himself was all in black with a splash of colour courtesy of a neon-orange scarf fashioned into a cravat. The over-the-top wings on his jacket were as dramatic as his signature coiffure.

Coetzee also dressed Isidingo actress Jay Anstey in a glitter mini with sharp winged front shoulders.

It was pleasing to see South African men finally coming to the fashion party. Even ordinary punters and the serious horsey set made an effort, with many in colourful checked shirts, bow ties and bright chinos.

R&B darling Donald donned a rather shiny black shirt and brightened it up with a cream military-inspired sleeveless vest.

Cute model and Selimathunzi presenter Lunga Tshabalala resembled a carnival performer in his candy-coloured striped jacket, pink shirt, blue bubblegum chinos and orange bow tie.

His co-presenter Zizo Beda was more sedate in a long pink gown with interesting bust detail.

The fashion was certainly flying high this year, with many fashionistas and aspiring socialites looking on point.

Oh, and the horses were pretty impressive too, especially when they raced.
