Adele’s 21 tops album sales for second year running
Los Angeles – Adele’s album 21 was the top selling album of 2012, marking the first time the same record has notched up the feat in back-to-back years since Soundscan started tracking sales in 1991.
According to the figures released yesterday, the album by the soulful British singer sold 4.4 million copies in the US in 2012 after selling 5.8 million copies in 2011.
Taylor Swift’s Red was the second best-selling album with 3.1 million in sales, with One Direction’s Up All Night in third place with sales of 1.6 million copies.
According to Soundscan, a total of 316 million albums were sold in 2012, down 4% on the year. CD sales and downloaded albums make up the total. In 2012 CD sales fell 13.5% and album downloads rose 14%to 118 million.
The number of individual songs downloaded continued to climb in 2012, rising 5% to 1.3 billion tunes.
The top selling song was Somebody That I Used to Know by the Belgian-Australian songwriter Gotye, which was downloaded 6.8 million times.
Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit Call Me Maybe was second with 6.5 million downloads and Fun.’s We Are Young was in third spot with 6 million downloads.
