DVD review – Tedious tale of love
DVD: The Romantics
Director: Galt Niederhoffer
Featuring: Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and Anna Paquin
Rating: 2/5
You know a film is in trouble when it is fronted by TV actors whose high profile is largely based on how much flesh they’ve flashed and who their partners are.
Josh Duhamel is married to singer Fergie and has a nice six-pack in Transformers. Katie Holmes’ relevance in the last six years comes from the fact that Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah’s couch for her and she gave the actor his first – and so far only – biological child.
Anna Paquin is the awesomely hick Sookie in True Blood who gets to be naked with the show’s two hot stars at regular intervals, and even married one of them in real life.
The story is about a group of friends who call themselves The Romantics because of their rather incestuous love for each other.
They get together one particular weekend to celebrate the wedding of Lila (Paquin) to Tom (Duhamel).
The maid of honour is Laura (Holmes) who happens to have been Tom’s on-off lover for ten years before they broke up and he picked up with Lila, completely blind-siding Laura.
All sorts of feelings and thoughts are laid bare and bad behaviour rules over this weekend.
The question is: will Tom wake up to realise that the love of his life is Laura or will he tie the knot with Lila?
Frankly, this film is so self-indulgent and annoying that you won’t give a toss either way.
I feel sorry for the rest of the support cast – including Malin Akerman, Elijah Wood and Candice Bergman – who obviously thought this production was a good idea.
Yawn.
