Faces of 2013: 2013 face of art
Being a joint winner of the MTN New Contemporary Award with Unathi Sigenu is a good acknowledgment of this young talent, Khanyisile Mbongwa.
And she is determined to play around with the recognition and to stretch its limits for her benefit.
She explains: “I’m a performing visual artist. My art took form as a performing poet interested in other aesthetic elements, particularly video and sound and I wanted to explore other artistic expression through performance.”
In her few years in the arts, she has found collaborations to be a strong part of practice because of its ability to transform concepts from individual to collective ones.
“This year I’ll be collaborating with largely unknown creatives from Cape Town, like Mzwabantu Dunga, aka Macho, a graphic designer
and Robyn Pretorius, a photographer and painter.
