‘I was an addict’ – Kelly Khumalo
Singer Kelly Khumalo has confessed that she was a drug addict for two years.
In a six-page interview with True Love magazine, on shelves from today, the starlet talks about dropping out of school, her music career, life with rapper Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye, drug addiction and the end of their relationship.
“The drugs had actually started long before I fell pregnant. On his birthday in 2009, I took cocaine for the first time. I did it almost as a gift for him,” Khumalo said in the interview.
According to Khumalo, she had been dating Maarohanye since 2008, after having met at a party in 2006 and was “so in love” with the rapper that she “had a tattoo of him done on my shoulder”.
The couple was happy until she fell pregnant with their son, Christian, which was when, she says, the rapper cheated on her.
The day she was planning to leave the rapper in March 2010, tragedy struck when Maarohanye and his co-accused, Themba Tshabalala, allegedly killed four learners on Mdlalose Street, Soweto, while racing. Khumalo decided to stay.
Four months after incident, the couple made headlines for their court appearances – and then, their abusive relationship.
Khumalo told Drum she was leaving the rapper but several reports claimed Khumalo and Maarohanye were still together.
She denies this.
“We were high, arguing in the car. And in almost a joking way I said: ‘I’m leaving you.’ He said: ‘You can’t leave me – we’re cut from the same cloth.’ But I wasn’t joking – I left. It was over.”
The star is now attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
