He indulges in a uniquely South African hobby – controlled car spinning.
Spinning cars would get most people’s heads spinning too, but YFM breakfast show host Moeti Tsiki – better known as Mo Flava – says his hobby has taught him how to harness his concentration and balance.
This unconventional sport has its roots in apartheid Soweto, when young gangsters used stolen cars to perform stunts.
Mo Flava became interested in car spinning as a recreational sport after meeting filmmaker Pule Motloung, the founder of Soweto Drift, where spinning is conducted in a controlled and safe environment.
Although this tyre-screeching craze is often negatively associated with thugs, it is actually an officially recognised motor sport, says Mo Flava, who started lessons at Motloung’s Spinning Training Academy earlier this year.
‘You get a rush once you know you can control a car while spinning in a figure eight,’ he says. ‘It’s also helpful in real life to know how to react if your car veers out of control.’
But more than that, Mo Flava says that mastering this macho sport has also taught him that he can take on any challenge, learn to adapt and strive to be the best at it.
‘That is something that comes in handy when you work in your comfort-zone.’
My signature style is… ‘Sneakers. I own more than 30 pairs – from dressy to sporty.’
