J& B Met in the Mother City ropes in most of Mzansi’s A-listers

Last Saturday night was proof that event planners need a lesson in communication.

While Jozi was rocking to the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the National Stadium and being wowed by Kanye West at The Dome, most of South Africa’s A-list flocked like birds of a feather to the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town for the J&B Met.

With this year’s theme being Made To Fly, there were wings, feathers and bird motifs galore.

Top Billing’s Jeannie D led the pack in a glittery bronze mini with high feathered shoulders and wedge heels. She looked like one of those AXE fallen angels . . . very sexy. Poor thing spent most of her time on a podium presenting, but did manage to sneak into the Sunglass Hut marquee later on where they took VIP to another level.

The music was pumping, the champers was kept proudly South African, the food was designer divine, and the black-and-white decadent dessert table was to die for! Never have cupcakes, cake lollies and humbugs looked so mouthwatering.

Dancing to the great music and chatting up a storm were loved-up couple Melinda Bam and Adriaan van der Bergh, who couldn’t keep their hands off each other.

Other couples were Matthew and Sonia Booth, who gushed about how much she was loving being a Mother City dweller; Clive Roberts with wife Cindy Nell-Roberts, who looks hot for a woman pregnant in her last trimester; sexy couple Lee-Ann and Nicky van der Walt, who are keen to try for a second baby soon; and The Wild’s Tyrone Keogh and Nicole Flint, who both have moved from Jozi to Cape Town. Wonder if their soapie romance has translated into real life.

We caught cricketer Herschelle Gibbs lurking around the Sunglass Hut tent hustling to get inside.

US-based actor Hakeem Kae-Kazim, who’s in the Mother City shooting an American TV series, was basking in the adoration of fellow celebs.

Over at the J&B marquee, life wasn’t exactly a snooze fest either. The bright retro décor was just on the right side of kitch and cool, guests – especially the women – were eternally grateful for the pamper corner, where professional make-up artists and hairdressers were kept busy from morning till night, and massage therapists gave neck, shoulder and foot rubs.

The food stations were also something to behold. The sea food spread with the most succulent of seared tuna and melt-in-your-mouth prawns was mobbed. Happily, the oyster-shucking guy was roaming, and so were the French maid-clad waitresses pushing retro trolleys piled high with colourful desserts. Later, celebs and schlebs were seen wolfing down pizzas, quesadillas and nachos laid out on black tiles.

DJ Sbu Leope proved to be a darling yet again as he posed with smitten fans. His Hugh Hefneresque blue suede LV loafers were on point.

Cape Town celeb socialites Natalie Becker, Dagbreek’s Kia Johnson and So You Think You Can Dance judge Didi Moses were also at the races.

Vuzu’s Lalla Hirayama was gorgeous in a blush-peach fitted-and-flare mini paired with studded yellow platform heels.

There were way too many fabulous things and people to mention, and as the sun set at about 8pm, the venue was scattered with stray feathers of different hues as people got down to the hip-hop and house sounds.
