Pics – Joburg Carnival: New Year celebrated in style

The carnival aims to "rival the likes of the Rio Carnival".

It was first held in 2004 and has become an annual event.

In the past, the Johannesburg CBD wasn’t a safe place on New Year’s Eve as a culture of throwing belongings from balconies existed. The carnival is said to have helped to counter this.

This year, the carnival focused on the upcoming African Cup of Nations.

Children from various Johannesburg shelters for orphans and streets kids participated for the first time this year.

The carnival closed with a concert at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown, where the residents welcomed the new year.
