‘Axe man’ read Bible before rape
Phindile Joseph Ntshongwana spent the day reading the Bible and watching Vampire movies before smearing Danone yogurt on himself and forcing his alleged rape victim to lick it off, the Durban High Court has heard.
The 27-year-old woman from Nongoma was allegedly kidnapped and raped in Yellowwood Park, Durban, between November 28 and December 1 2010.
Ntshongwana has also been charged with four counts of murder, two of attempted murder and a charge of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm. The woman is giving evidence in camera with only journalist allowed to sit in.
In describing the details of the four-day ordeal, she portrayed Ntshongwana as a deranged and violent man who would shout loudly at her, accusing her of having multiple lovers.
“He was acting like I was his girlfriend and like I knew him,” she said.
She was slapped repeatedly when she tried to escape and twice she was pulled by her hair after she had tried to send a message to her sister.
“He said I needed to die. I told him that I was sorry. I just wanted to send my sister a message,” the woman sobbed.
Smiling, he told her what to write. “He told me to say that I’m with a wonderful man and I’m alright where I was,” she said.
The testified that Ntshongwana had stripped naked and covered himself with Danone yogurt and demanded she lick it off him. He then proceeded to rape her for the second time.
Earlier, Ntshongwana had spent the day reading his Bible and watching Vampire movies. He took out the Bible after she asked him to change the channel, saying she was scared.
Throughout her testimony the woman wrung her hands.
When she had to identify Ntshongwana in court, she covered her face and cried, looking away.
A copy of Ntshongwana’s identity document, which she stole while locked up in Ntshongwana’s home was provided as evidence.
The woman also managed to steal the order slip for pizza that had been delivered for them while she was captured.
