M-Net pulls Oscar advert campaign
“Oscar Pistorius has proven central to an inspired campaign by South African TV Channel, M-Net,” reads the most recent posting on Oscar Pistorius’s official website.
In a one-line statement this afternoon, however, M-Net’s Lani Lombard announced the channel was pulling the commercial.
“Out of respect and sympathy to the bereaved, M-Net will be pulling its entire Oscars live coverage campaign featuring Oscar Pistorius with immediate effect,” she wrote.
It’s a surprising move and would suggest the channel is shielding itself from any potential scandal around today’s Pistorius storm.
The first of the campaign featuring Pistorius can still be viewed on M-Net’s website and is indeed rather inspired.
It was launched on January 20 to promote the pay channel’s coverage of the Oscars.
In it, two comedians play event promoters, plotting how to come up with a winning campaign for Hollywood’s annual Oscar splash.
“A life-sized Oscar,” suggests the boss. “Go. Get it for me,” he tells his assistant – who later wheels in Oscar Pistorius, who emerges from a zipped-up bag.
