Mpofu also told the commission there will be evidence and allegations that some of the injured were also run over by police Nyalas.

This was during the testimony of police crime scene expert Warrant Officer Thibelo Patrick Thamae, who processed the scene where 16 of the 34 mine workers who died on the day were shot in full view of television and press cameras.

Thamae earlier agreed that the scene had been tampered with, referring to the fact that when he arrived at the scene, he found traditional weapons piled up near the cattle kraal where the shooting had taken place.

He also said he had been handed two firearms by a police officer, which had been removed from the scene.

Thamae said it was standard procedure not to tamper with a crime scene and that it happened only under special circumstances.

Mpofu, who represents those who were arrested and injured on the day of the shooting, put it to Thamae if he knew of allegations that police went back and finished off some of the injured people at scene one.

But SA Police Services lawyer Ishmael Semenya SC, objected, saying Mpofu should tell the commission whether he will present the allegations as evidence or not.

Mpofu said he did not take kindly to having his cross-examination interrupted, adding that he will provide evidence and allegations.

Thamae told the commission he retrieved 210 rifle cartridge cases, 31 pistol cartridge cases, 57 shotgun cartridge cases and two stun grenades at the scene.

The commission has also been shown a police video of the scene, with bloodied bodies lying in the open and men being treated by paramedics.
