Modimolle Monster case postponed, Bonnette ‘threatened’
The case against the “Modimolle Monster” and his three co-accused was postponed by the Modimolle Magistrates Court today for further investigation and a trial date to be set.
An earlier ban on publishing pictures of one of Johan Kotze’s co-accused was lifted. The court heard that the case might be moved to a high court.
Forensic and ballistic evidence was still outstanding. Kotze, wearing baggy blue jeans and a checked shirt, did not show any emotion in court.
He faces 17 charges including rape, murder, conspiracy to rape, kidnapping, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He allegedly hired three workers to gang-rape his estranged wife, Ina Bonnette. They allegedly also mutilated her body with objects including nails, pliers, a grinder, and a screwdriver.
The workers were allegedly ordered to participate in the torture at gunpoint.
He is further alleged to have shot dead Bonnette’s 19-year-old son, Conrad, in his rented Modimolle house.
Earlier outside court, women activists protested and sang for bail to be denied to the four. Members of the ANC Women’s League joined Bonnette’s friends, who wore pink, at the court house.
Bonnette had apparently received a threatening phone call yesterday, her friend Elize Coetzer told reporters outside court.
The caller spoke in Afrikaans and told Bonnette he was watching her, she said. The group said she was advised not to come to court today.
After today’s proceedings, prosecutor Renier van Rooyen dismissed the claim that Bonnette had been advised not to come to court.
“I didn’t say that … All she told me was that there was a threat.”
Kotze was arrested after being on the run for eight days.
His three co-accused – Mmapuru Peter Mohlako (34), Andries Paparona Sithole (42) and Sello Frans Mphaka (38) – were arrested within days of each other.
They had apparently been hired to remove palm trees from the garden of Kotze’s home.
Bonnette had taken out a restraining order against Kotze when the relationship soured.
Rumours that Kotze had been served with divorce papers earlier today could not be confirmed.
