Motsepe resigned before SACP call – SABC
Limpopo cooperative governance MEC Clifford Motsepe resigned from the SABC board “long before” the South African Communist Party (SACP) asked for his withdrawal, the public broadcaster has said.
“We cannot accept that any party can take glory out of this (his resignation). The SACP gives the impression that they are the ones telling us what to do, but that is incorrect,” SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago has said.
“Mr Motsepe resigned long before the SACP could even think of this.”
He said President Jacob Zuma appointed Motsepe, and the broadcaster was waiting for him to accept the resignation. “He (Motsepe) has never attended a board meeting since resigning.”
On Friday the SACP called on the broadcaster to “withdraw” Motsepe’s membership because he was a politician, and did not qualify to be a board member.
“The SABC is supposed to be a political body (in which) no politicians should sit. There is one MEC from this province who is sitting on the SABC board and that is illegal,” SACP Limpopo secretary Gilbert Kganyago said at the time.
