Nkandla probe results ‘soon’ – Nxesi

The first of three investigations into Nkandlagate has been completed.

And Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi will share the results of the probe with the public “in due course”.

Nxesi initiated an internal investigation into his department’s decision to upgrade President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla compound after City Press revealed in September last year that more than R200 million was spent on the project.

At the same time, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela and Auditor-General Terence Nombembe initiated probes into the controversial spend that became known as Nkandlagate.

In November Nxesi said in an interview that the internal investigation would be completed “in a week or two”.

He also committed to sharing the results of the probe “with the nation”. Nxesi’s spokesperson Sabelo Mali confirmed that the minister had received the report.

“As indicated previously, the minister is still committed to share the outcome of the investigation with the public in due course.” Nxesi wouldn’t commit to a time period.

The minister previously suggested that suppliers who, according to leaked documents in the possession of City Press, were paid R248 million for construction, engineering services and supplies, overcharged Public Works.

In August 2010 former public works minister Geoff Doidge told Parliament the project would cost R6.4 million.

Documents show how Doidge and his successor, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde, personally got involved in fast-tracking the project and kept Zuma abreast of developments.
