Two sentenced to life for murder of constable

Two men have been sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of student constable Pule Rasebakoa.

Teko Mphuti (26) from Lesotho and Malefetsane Nhlapo (36) from QwaQwa were sentenced today in the Harrismith High Court.

They were arrested on June 29 2012, three months after Rasebakoa (36) went missing in the Drakensberg mountains.

Rasebakoa, who loved to run, went missing after leaving his house for a run in the mountains on March 8 2012.

After the arrest of Mphuti and Nhlapo, his body was found buried in a shallow grave in a place called Lekgalong le Lefifi (The Dark Pass) in the Drakensberg mountains.

This area separates Lesotho and South Africa, and is notoriously used by stock thieves.

It took the rescue team about six hours to find the spot where he was buried and bring his body out of the mountains.

During sentencing, Judge Connie Motsumi also declared Mphuti and Nhlapo unfit to possess a firearm.
