Afcon: ‘Bad luck women’ angers women’s league
It’s a “travesty” that local organisers would entertain the whims of Africa Cup of Nations teams who consider women in stadiums to be bad luck, the ANC Women’s League has said.
Daily Sun reported that women had been banned from “getting anywhere near the players” at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. They would not be allowed to “occupy the ground floor where the changing rooms are” after Ghana, DR Congo, Mali and Niger had raised objections, the newspaper reported.
“South African women are ardent soccer supporters and it is insulting to have them discriminated (against) in this manner based on the nonsensical belief that women bring bad luck,” the ANCWL said in a statement.
“The ANCWL is confident that this discrimination against women will not see the light of day and Afcon will rectify this with immediate effect.”
The league called on women to demand equal rights.
