Malema painting banned
A Bloemfontein high school pupil’s painting of expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema may not be exhibited at the annual Bloem Show because it is “too political”.
Artist Alta Bonnet (17) depicted Malema as a fat cat on a gravy train, Afrikaans daily Beeld reported today.
Bonnet said she was surprised and angry when the show organisers banned her work, but she was able to laugh about it now.
She told the newspaper the organisers may have been a little uptight. “They told my art teacher it was too political.”
Bonnet painted Malema as part of a class project on the portrayal of societal scars.
Bloem Show chief executive Elmarie Prinsloo said it was a family event and that controversial art might upset people. Two artworks deemed too violent had also been rejected, she said.
Bonnet’s teacher Rae Gagiano described her painting as satirical.
“Technically, it is a good drawing. I did not think it would be considered offensive,” she was quoted as telling Beeld.
