Afcon standard impresses DRC coach

The Democratic Republic of Congo coach Claude Le Roy says he has been impressed by the standard of football at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Le Roy says it has been evident that the gap between so-called top teams and small teams has narrowed and it is difficult to distinguish between them.

Le Roy says he was most impressed by Ethiopia’s performance against Zambia, when the East Africans came back from 2-0 down to draw the game.

“They have been very impressive and nobody gave them a chance because we did not know a lot about them. Unfortunately they lost against Burkina Faso but it was not a true reflection of their potential,” said the Afcon veteran.

After most of the first-round matches ended in draws, Le Roy says he expects teams to go all out in the final rounds as it is make or break for them.

He says this augers well for the development of football on the continent as it is no longer a given who will walk away with the crown.

“Whoever wins the tournament will have to work hard as it won’t be easy for any side. There are still going to be surprises and this is good for football.”

He says the fact that most ply their trade at top European leagues has helped to improve the African standard.

Le Roy says his players are impressed by the facilities in the country, particularly playing at the same stadiums that hosted World Cup matches.

“It’s been a great tournament so far and all credit must go to the organisers for putting together such a good event. There have been mishaps here and there but overall it has been good, especially on the field of play,” said Le Roy.
