CAF fines Zambia coach for ‘not sexy enough’ comments
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed Zambia coach Herve Renard a suspended $10 000 (R89 000) fine after he claimed the ruling body was happy his team was eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations because it is “not sexy enough.”
CAF says it received letters of apology from Renard and the Football Association of Zambia but still issued the suspended fine and a formal warning for the comments he made after Zambia played Burkina Faso on January 29.
CAF said the fine would be lifted if there is no recurrence for a year.
Defending champion Zambia was knocked out in the group stage, prompting Frenchman Renard to say CAF didn’t want his team to win again because it wasn’t glamorous enough to represent Africa at the Confederations Cup.
