Caster wins again
Olympic silver medallist Caster Semenya is scooping awards wherever she goes.
And she did it again today at the 2012 SPAR gsport Awards that took place at the Wanderers Club in Illovo, Johannesburg.
Semenya took the Athlete of the Year award, just two weeks after she was awarded Sportswoman of the Year at the South African Sports Awards.
“This is an honour to be awarded for what I do. Thank you very much to everyone,” she said shyly.
The awards are South Africa’s only awards event dedicated to women’s sport. And with ambassadors including Anele Mdoda, Mpho Maboi, Hulisani Ravele, Roxy Burger, Liezel van der Westhuizen and Shashi Naidoo drumming up support on social networks, the event generated over 230 000 public votes.
The event – the brainchild of former cricket commentator Kass Naidoo and her husband, Ryk Meiring – was hosted by TV personality Leanne Manas.
The guest of honour was Olympic gold medallist Penny Heyns.
Other winners included:
Hall of Fame inductee – Muditambi Ravele
Athlete with a Disability – Natalie Du Toit
Up & Coming Athlete – Thato Makhafola
Coach of the Year – Elize Kotze
Woman of the Year – Venessa Clark
Style Star of the Year – Lalla Hirayama
Sports Federation of the Year – SA Hockey Association
