Gaxa ready to slot in
Defender Siboniso Gaxa was modest about his chances of featuring in Bafana Bafana’s quarterfinal clash against Mali on Saturday.
Gaxa is expected to slot in at the right position in the absence of suspended Anele Ngcongca.
But the Kaizer Chiefs defender said it was not a forgone conclusion that he would be considered for the match.
He, however, said he would be ready if called upon to play.
“It would be nice representing the country on home soil and I am looking forward to that, if I start. I have played in big tournaments before, but this would be one of my biggest games,” said Gaxa.
He said no one was guaranteed a place in the starting line-up.
“We all deserve to play but, unfortunately, only 11 can start. The coach has made changes in the previous games and we will see which team he puts out there on Saturday.”
Coach Gordon Igesund yesterday said Gaxa was the obvious choice for the position because of his ability to initiate attacks from the back.
The Bafana mentor said he was still going to consider the 28-year-old full back even if Ngcongca was available.
Gaxa said Mali was beatable after seeing them in action, but said they would have to stick to their game plan.
“We have our strength and so do they. This will be an interesting game for both sides, but we would like to win it for our people because Durban has been good to us.”
