Heartbreak for SA as Bafana’s Afcon journey ends

Bafana Bafana were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations in a penalty shootout with Mali.

The game was tied 1-all before it was decided on spot kicks.

The Eagles goalkeeper kept out shots from Dean Furman and May Mahlangu, while Lehlohonolo Majoro shot wide.

Only Siphiwe Tshabalala was successful with his penalty attempt, with Cheick Diabate, Adama Tamboura and Mahamane Traore scoring for the visitors as the Moses Mabhida Stadium was stunned into silence.

Earlier, Tokelo Rantie fired the hosts in front with a close-range finish after 31 minutes, before Mali replied through their veteran captain Seydou Keita in the 58th minute. His free header sent the match into extra time before the drama of penalties.

What should we expect with junior players taking penalties? It does not mean if you had a good game so you can successfully take penalty. Poor decision making on bafana side and Gordon indeed.

  what does age have to do it…in soccer 21 yrs is old enough to be best player in the world…think Messi and Ronaldo. The keeper was good and yes our players couldn’t hold their nerve as well as Malians, but age had nothing to do with it.

    it is not about age. You don’t really get it. Being senior and junior in the national squad is all about the caps. Shabba is the most senior player with 75 caps. Does it really have to be explained further than That? I still repeat it junior players in such a stage taking a penalty is suicidal in any team or country. Remember how Ghana were booted out in world cup 2010.
