Let’s rally behind Banyana – Mokonyane
Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has called for the province to show support for Banyana Banyana ahead of their big weekend game.
The female national soccer team is expected to take on Equatorial Guinea on Sunday for the finals of the Confederation of African Football African Women’s Championships.
“As a nation we did it for Bafana Bafana during the opening of the first-ever Soccer World Cup on African soil. Let us now do it for Banyana Banyana,” she said today.
The team made history on Wednesday when they beat Nigeria and secured a spot in the finals.
It was the first time that a South African national team beat Africa’s number one-ranked team in an official competition since 1993.
“Banyana Banyana’s victory signals the dawn of a new era for women’s football in South Africa. Let us – all the 13-million Gauteng residents – rally behind the team when the girls face the home team, Equatorial Guinea in Bata,” she said.
Mokonyane encouraged supporters to wear their national team jerseys in support of the ladies on Sunday.
She also congratulated the team’s coach Joseph Mkhonza, who was presented with the South Africa coach of the year award at the SA Sports Awards last Sunday.
