NMB Sevens officially launched
The countdown to the inaugural NBM Sevens Premier League Tournament has begun.
The 16-team rugby tournament was officially launched in Joburg today and organisers have announced that the winners will get a whopping R1 million in prize money.
The event takes place in George on December 14 and 15.
Tournament promoter Willem Strauss said: “We are so happy and I think the excitement is really building into a vibe. The inclusion of Kaizer Chiefs will definitely spice up the event.
“There is R1 million at stake and hopefully the tournament can grow. We hope the stadium will be filled to capacity and the crowd will be enthusiastic.”
Soweto soccer giants, Kaizer Chiefs, recently announced their participation in the tournament.
NBM All Stars player Mzwandile Sticks said he was looking forward to taking part in the event.
“I have been out of action for two years now but I hope I will be fit by then. I am really working hard to get my fitness back. We are excited to be able to take part in the prestigious tournament. We are looking forward to making appearances and we all realise this is a special event,” said Sticks.
Sticks captained the South Africa sevens team during the 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series, which saw the team win the series title for the first time.
The Super Rugby Franchises of the Cheetahs, Vodacom Blue Bulls, Sharks, DHL Western Province and MTN Golden Lions will also take part.
