PSL’s lethal weapons
Former sharpshooters share their thoughts on this season’s top goal scorers.
The English Premiership is raving about the lethal strike force of Luis Suárez and Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool, and Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie at Manchester United.
Locally, the explosive combination of Robert Ng’ambi and Siphelele Mthembu at Platinum Stars, and that of Bernard Parker and Knowledge Musona at Kaizer Chiefs, has sparked hopes that the Absa Premiership strikers might deliver better than the previous seasons.
It has been eight years since Collins Mbesuma scored 25 league goals – the last time a striker had netted 20 or more league goals in a single season.
Only Siyabonga Nomvethe and Richard Henyekane came close to the 20-goal mark – they each scored 19 times during the 2008/09 and 2011/12 seasons, respectively.
Former Premiership lethal sharpshooters Pollen Ndlanya, Wilfred Mugeyi and Marc Batchelor say consistency is key.
“It is still early in the season, but the current scoring rate has given some hope,” said Ndlanya.
He put in 23 goals in 48 matches for Orlando Pirates before retiring in 2002.
In his heyday, Mugeyi was the PSL’s inaugural golden boot winner with 22 goals.
He said: “I am quite impressed by the way in which the goals are coming in so far.
“It is not entirely on how the strikers start, but how they finish at the end of the season.”
Ndlanya’s favourite combinations were that of Mthembu and Ng’ambi, Musona and Parker at Chiefs, and the pairing of Swallows’ Nomvethe and Edward Manqele.
Parker and Manqele are the joint leading Premiership top scorers, with four goals each in six matches.
Batchelor holds the distinction of having played for Chiefs, Pirates, Sundowns and Swallows.
He said: “I think the progress we see boils down to the coaches understanding their partnerships.
“For example, Stuart Baxter gets the best out of Parker and Musona, and they are delivering.”
But it is at SuperSport United where goal-scoring has proved to be every player’s responsibility – nine different players have contributed to the team’s 11 league goals so far.
