Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo, who has taken a lot of flak from the supporters, sounded surprised when asked about his performance in the job.
Questions have been asked as to whether he deserves to be included in the team, let alone to be the captain of the side. But Khumalo said he was not aware that people have been questioning his capability.
“That’s news to me,” Khumalo said today. “But people have their own opinion and my job is to focus on the team and make sure we do well.”
He said he was not too concerned about criticism, adding that “it will always be there and I can handle it”.
Khumalo has been dubbed the weakest link in the Bafana defence but he believes he still has a lot to offer and will not be distracted by his detractors.
He was given the armband by Gordon Igesund after Steven Pienaar retired from international football last year.
Khumalo said for him it was an honour to lead the team and he was looking forward to a successful stint at Bafana.
