Dagga is for dummies
It is a widely known fact that dagga, as much as it may be regarded as a herb with some remedial effects, when it is smoked pure or mixed with other substances such as alcohol or other drugs it becomes a lethal concoction that causes irreversible damage to brain cells, often resulting in mental illness.
In South Africa alone, there are thousands of young people who have dropped out of tertiary institutions owing to mental illness resulting from this drug.
Many homes are shattered because of the fathers and husbands who are currently institutionalised as a result of marijuana abuse. Our government is spending millions on supporting and treating mentally ill patients who can no longer be part of larger society because of the stigma they carry with them as a result of drugs.
Democracy should not be a “demon” in a “crazy” world before we can prioritise our needs as a developing country.
Imagine six more unproductive public holidays full of ganja, schools and churches covered with a cloud of dagga smoke instead of the “Holy Spirit”; children being taught in Rastafarian by Rastafarian teachers in their own lingo that is not even internationally, nevermind nationally, understood and recognised?
Where are we heading to, South Africans? Are we all so “puffed up” by marijuana smoke, we fail to rationalise?
There are numerous vegetarians in this country, but I’ve never heard them ask for their own “piece of land” where they can be regarded as “unique and special” like Rastafarians because they don’t consume meat.
Good for them and their health, but we meat lovers embrace their decision as we end up with more meat to masticate on and digest. It is their choice to be the “herbivores”, and it is ours to be the “omnivores”.
There are many vital areas of our life that require urgent attention, such as the quality of education, service delivery, quality of policing, dealing with widespread corruption at higher levels, dealing with the HIV/Aids epidemic, and so on. But not “chimney” issues . . . please!
